I know this might not be easy because I don't have good pictures (left my phone at home so I had to grab stills off my GoPro video) but I caught two sunfish last week in a park pond in Allen that had yellow-tipped fins. The fish themselves were fairly dark. I have caught green sunfish before and don't think that is what they were. I know bluegills can have different appearances but I have never seen any that have yellow fins. The first one was caught on a little Beetle Spin-type lure from Strike King, while the second was caught on a Rage Tail Space Monkey while bass fishing. Any idea what kind of sunfish this is? Thanks.

Also, for anyone who cares, here is the video of the fish being caught. It was a good day, also managed two bass and a channel cat, which smashed a chatterbait in shallow water. Fishing video

Thanks. The greens I have caught were in another pond on this same creek so that is definitely a possibility. The ones I have caught previously looked just like the green sunfish you see in the textbooks, while these were really dark. But I know that bass change shades depending on water clarity and other factors so I assume sunfish do as well.

Edit: I just looked at my old photos of the green sunfish I caught downstream two summers ago and they have yellow-orange tipped fins. Looks like we have a winner. Thanks again.

You are right on the money! Fish colors can be greatly effected by their environment that they are in. coolio

I was really surprised to catch one on the Space Monkey, which is a fairly good-sized (4 inches long with lots of wings and flappers) creature bait. Guess he was just hungry and the Space Monkey that was nearly the same size as him looked tasty.

Greens are a very aggressive fish and will attack big baits. They have traits somewhat like a bass. eeks

It's a hybrid bluegill, a cross between a green sunfish and a bluegill.

Could that be a possible "Georgia Giant"?

Thanks for posting this. I believe I caught one like that last year while bass fishing with a Zoom Baby Brush Hog and didn't know what kind it was and like Banker said it was aggressive. The way it hit I thought I had a small bass.

Also, I caught one about a week ago in a creek on a small grub on a jig head and it also hit hard too.

Thanks for the info guys.

I really like the green bluegill mix- here on the north Texas creeks we call 'em "Mean & Nasties" since the blow up like bass on top water flies and have a better fight than a pure strain green.

Glad you liked it.

Thanks everyone for the comments on this thread. After striking out on bass on Monday I am grabbing the spinning gear and going panfishing on Tuesday. I'll post pics on this forum if I manage to get into a mess of perch.

As promised, I got out and caught some bluegill in Allen on Tuesday. Got six on a combination of Gulp! Alive! Maggots and Crappie Nibbles. Was hoping for some more green sunfish but I am definitely not complaining. All were pretty small but still plenty of fun to catch. It was also the first time taking my new spinning combo out. The Cabela's Whuppin' Stick and Lew's American Hero spinning reel worked great. Here is the video.
