When water is stained, you notice the fish have less color and tend to be pale looking. The bait fish are the same way. I was fishing fairly stained water one day in late May (visibility about 5") and crappie were biting. Since the fish looked very pale, I decided to switch to a white curly tail on a white jig head. The crappie hammered that bait. I learned a lesson that day by experimenting.
