Anyone here fish all your soft plastics weightless? I fish a lot of heavy cover and get tired of pulling grass and moss off my baits after every cast. Just curious what you guys do and feel about fishing weightless

Not always but love it when it's right. Lots of choices but nothing is consistent for me as a Lake Fork Tackle Ring Fry with an EWG Superline 4/0 hook. That hook adds just enough weight to cause the bait to slowly sink. Sometimes an occasional twitch but more times than not it works best just letting it fall on a semi-tight line and let it sit a minute before twitching it back. Killer on a bed too.

There are a few things I do, given the right circumstances. I've been fishing soft jerk baits weightless with good success. The occasional slider worm weightless. I haven't tried craws or brush hogs or anything like that weightless, but I've seen people post that they throw these baits weightless. I don't understand it around cover but I also haven't looked into it, either.

You can also consider using a 1/16 oz weight. It adds just enough weight to help the bait sink, but doesn't kill some of the action you get with weightless. Also with lighter weight try lighter line. For me 10 lb test with 1/16oz weight is dynamite. You will break off some, but the number of bites really goes up.

I remember once I was catching fish out of trees in about 18-20 foot, fishing weightless. Had to just count it down until it stopped, but once it did and I hopped it, they nailed it. It was so fun. Took patience, but it was a very fun day.

Haha. Some of the plastics I use would be "top water" baits if I didn't use a weight.
Have you guys tried the Stike King Finesse worms? They float with a super line 0/4 EWG Gama! And by float, I don't mean almost suspend. I mean they float like a PFD. Haha

weightless works well in heavy cover where a weighted presentation gets to hanging the grass and burying up to much. weightless just looks more natural and has to be fished slower which is part of what makes it work better. It will pop free and slowly settle back down where a weighted lure just drags grass and stays buried to much to look natural. dead sticking the weightless baits is very effective too like 361V mentioned for like thirty seconds or more in heavy cover. I don't fish everything weightless all the time though. sometimes a heavy weight falling fast gets reaction bites but it don't work too well to fish it back through the cover with the weight. Retrieve it and flip back to the next spot to cover more water looking for reaction strikes on a fast fall through the cover.

I learned to bass fish by throwing a weightless Bass Assassin fluke. I'm kinda lucky in that sense, I learned to utilize a technique that most guys think is difficult. Weightless fishing is easy to me. But just like anything else, too much of a good thing is usually bad. There are plenty of times when the fish want something different. Specifically, hopping or dragging a plastic instead of letting it sink slowly. I only fish weightless if the bite is tough. Aggressive fish can be caught in so many easier ways it just doesn't make sense to be throwing a weightless worm all the time. And sometimes you need the constant contact with the bottom to trigger a strike.
