So I used to fish a whole lot more when I was younger than I do now. I also now live in a part of Texas where lakes are pretty much non-existent whereas growing up Whitney, Aquilla, Tradinghouse, and Navarro Mills were just down the road. Most of my gear that I bought back then was a Shimano reel and a Bass Pro Shops Bionic Blade or Extreme rod. I think they're still pretty good rods but I have a couple that need to be replace. One rod is missing a guide, another broke on my last kayaking trip, and another has a crack in the glass around a guide. I've been looking alternative choices to try something new and I'm interested in what people have to say about the Lew's rods, specifically the American Hero and Speed Stick series and also the St. Croix Mojo Bass rods.

All 3 are in my price range which of course the American Hero is on the lower end which is a plus. I don't get to fish as much as I would like so value is important too.

Gander Mountain has the gsx tournament series rods on sale a lot. Bought one a month or so back and it's amazing. Had an American Hero rod in 6'10 fished it a few times and gave it to a friend. Have a speed stick in 6'6 that I like a lot. Might wanna check out the new Maxim series from Phenix rods they are in the price range.

I got an american hero spinning rod and reel, I can work with the reel for the price, the rod however was disappointing to me. It was pretty sensitive, i caught a couple fish with it on a shaky head. The fit and finish of the rod was sub par for the standard the lew's products normally hold. I was spooling the rod and the line got caught in the top rod guide and nicked my fluorocarbon in a spot where i felt i just needed to respool again. It will probably be fine if you don't fish a whole lot, but i wouldn't consider it quality. I still use all Lew's reels, i love them. Just not the AH level.

In that case, I will probably get a couple of the St. Croix to try out. I may try out some of the Lew's reels though.
