Grandson wants to go tuna (and other) fishing for HS graduation present. What does anyone think of these trips out of Port A? Looks like a great deal, but would like some experienced input. I understand yellowfin may be sparse this time of year, but I am sure blackfin and other species will keep us busy. What about the boat, sleeping arrangements? Thinking of renting heavier boat rod and spinning rods there at Dolphin. How is that equipment? Could certainly use some help, if anyone from DFW is going or can help with some training prior to trip, would compensate you for your time. Need help with lure selection, general knowledge on what to do, etc. Looking at June 9, appreciate everyone's input. Thanks!

2 day trips is what I would do because you can only keep a 2 day limit. Unless thats changed. I have fishing 12 hr trips with them before they will put you on fish.

I would recommend the Scat Cat 56 hour trip over the Dolphin Docks 60 hour trip. You'll get alot more productive fishing time in because the Scat Cat is faster. It's also got more usable deck space for fishing and better amenities than the DD boats.

Thanks Uncle Zeek for the input. I called and no tuna trips by Scat Cat until October. Said the tuna are there but they are fishing for other species (snapper, ling, etc.). Don't think we can hold out until Oct, will have to rough it with DD. Besides, will give us an excuse to go again! Anyone care to chime in whether the tuna (specifically yellowfin) will be at the floaters in June?

I thought DD had new and faster boats? I'm not a fan of scat cat casting areas. Prob won't fish on that boat again. I also do t like staying way out at one rig for 2 days. I'd jump on DD for the variety of fishing available

Two different boats used for the DD long trips. I spoke to someone at DD the other day. , steered me to the La Pesca boat/trip instead of Dolphin. Said LP was much faster than the Dolphin, could get almost as much fishing time on 60 hour LP versus 80 hour Dolphin. We booked on the June 9 60 hour.

La Pesca and Dolphin are both slow boats.

My experiences with them has been about a 14 hour ride out to fishing grounds and fish overnight for tuna. Then head towards reefs and structure at daylight for bottom fishing, then back out for tuna the next night.

Then another 14 hour ride in.

The La Pesca was talked about recently as getting new engines and talked about the bunk room was better. Supposed to be faster.

Well then it looks like I'm wrong. Perhaps it might be worth trying the La Pesca again.

*edit* just read their website. No braided line on their boat. That kinda sucks.

You can read about this (speed, braid) over on 360. Capt. James (until he moved to Alaska) said the LP travels at 14 - 15 knots now which is an improvement over the past. He also clarifies the "no braid' issue as well.

Yeah, 14-15 knots would make the trip out to the floaters much more pleasant.

Why aren't they using the new dolphin express! Supposedly that boat runs 16 to 19 knots in calm seas. Plus it's a beautiful awesome boat!!! Haven't been on it but saw it this January when we went on the capt Paul.

Politicians, baseball players, high-powered corporate CEO's they all seem to eventually let us down. Nature, however, does not. Look to her for inspiration and you will learn the secrets to living a good life. The most Important lesson it would seem is to make sure you spend as much time fishing as anything else.

They use the Dolphin Express for 50 hour trips ..... they limit the number of fishermen and the rates are much higher.
