I don't need a diesel truck, but I am looking for a tow vehicle, and I found a killer deal on an f-250 with only 143k miles on it. I've heard a few bad things about this motor, is it good, bad, should I stay away?

I believe that they have some head issues similar to the 6.0 but they are much better than the 6.0 for sure.. nature of power strokes (international) i suppose. I myself don't need a diesel either but I have a hpcr cummins and it has been very good to me. if you've never owned one, there are some things to consider as far cost of ownership is concerned. if the motor has been stock with no chip and punctual oil changes than you will be fine but if you don't know the history, it's going to be a gamble. I bought an 03 5.9 with a 6spd trans dodge ram with 189k miles and wouldn't trade it for new 6.7 if you paid me

First off let me say if you make it any where over 200,000 miles with a 6.4 your on borrowed time. I would not own one. Me & my friend who both have shops work on them alL the time. Most of them are a money hole with no bottom. There are some good ones out there but very few.
They either do 3 things.
engine blows up from cam shaft
do to ruining lifter
egr causes engine to fry
engine will just blow peroid
Thats a 150,000 you don't know how it's been run or taken care of. Me personally I would Pass.
The farmer out here that I do stuff for has one. 100,000 miles on it. 2 engines,3 egr valves,2 fuel systems. No tuners. All dealership maint. Done by book. He brought to me for the first time because he wanted a delete kit.

They are decent engines. Most issues can be resolved with a MLS head gasket job and ARP head studs, egr cooler/egr system delete, and being a responsible owner/operator. Keep idle times as low as possible, only use ford motor craft oil with anti foaming additives/property's, and don't drive it like its a hot rod. Most injector issues with the HEUI injectors is stiction. Look up PowerStroke help online and on YouTube. There is a ton of information there.

The 6.4 does not use a heui fuel system like the 7.3 and 6.0 did so oil quality is not an issue with injectors on a 6.4. In our shop we have seen 2 6.4 that both had erosion through the back side of the water pump which then causes a coolant loss and oil gain because the water pump is the timing cover on this engine coolant dumps straight into the crankcase. Then not to mention the egr failures i would say me being a diesel tech loves these engines. So you know where im going with this.

thumb cheers

I just hope it ended in 2010 when the 6.4 went away cause i shure would hate to have to trade my 6.7 in and go back to a d-max. I will have to say though once you drop the 5k in a 6.0 they are a pretty damn good runnin engine. We strongly believe that if cooling system mantinance is kept up it will cut down on the amount of egr and timing cover issues on the 6.0 and the 6.4. Most important mantinance on a 6.0 is oil changes and coolant changes. 6.4 and 6.7 is fuel filters and coolant changes and of course adding a coolant filter to any engine is gonna do nothin but help.

All pretty well true , the front cover is the root of it all. The leak at the front cover allows the marriage between oil and coolant and th spawn of that is radiator destruction , egr system destruction , and valve train destruction which leads to engine destruction.
