As I was moving to the next spot yesterday on the open lake, another boat was aiming to cross my path, from my port bow. I was on his starboard. Instead of giving way, like he was supposed to, he kept on coming. Avoiding a collision, I slowed and pointed my bow behind him, signaling he could keep coming. He never slowed, deviated his path or even looked at me. I've seen this happen several times over the last few months.

An easy way to remember who has the right of way is the bow light, "port red one". The port light is red. If I see the port light, at night or his port side in daylight, I have to yield. If I see a green light, or the starboard side, like yesterday, I have the right of way.

It's not so bad in daylight, other than the fact it shows the guy has no boating skills beyond running full throttle. At night, or under limited visibility, different story. Don't want to be on the water with that.

Agree 100%. Lot of boaters that know nothing about nautical safety. Had a buddy that I knew had never driven a boat, went out and bout a $60,000 speed boat and asked me to go out on it. I told him not until he took the nautical know how course. Wish more people would take it.

Seems the minority follow the coast guard navigational rules these days.

Was moving to the Bank with my trolling motor and a guy in a Saltwater-type skiff came racing on the Lake about 30 mph and instead of going behind me with all that open water, he went right in front of me not 10 feet away. As he approached, I waving for him to drive behind me, but he just keep going staring at me as I sat on the front pole seat. The longer I fish, the more rudeness and disrespect I see. You would think after 45 years boating, I would not be surprised at anything.

Some of the rudeness, I blame on young people that in today's society don't care about anyone but themselves. They drive their water-filled wakeboard boats and huge speakers blaring within 10 feet of my boat while I'm fishing and thety could care less about their huge wake. But, I'm seeing more and more boaters in all types of boats that totally disregard boating friendly, but actually disregard all safety procedures.

It'll only get worse with society changing and more people on the water.

Many of them fail to follow rules when there are lines painted on a roadway. Sadly, it's too much to expect more on the water. I've witnessed the skipper of a 75' yacht fail to give right-of-way, so possibly they think money equates to priority & privilege. Little did he realize that the Coast Guard was behind him. That was funny....
