I've started running a Humminbird 899, using the same 12 volt rechargeable deer feeder battery I was using with my Lowrance Mark 4. With the Mark 4 it would last two or three trips, but with the 899 it doesn't even last two hours! Is this the wrong battery or has this battery gone bad over the winter? What is the best battery to be using for this unit? Thanks in advance for the advice.

According to the Hummingbird web site, the power draw on the 899CI HS SI is 780 mA, so whichever flavor of 899 you have should be close. Round up to 1 amp per hour, and see what your battery is rated. The Mark 4 draws 250 mA, so your 899 is using 3 times the power the Mark 4 needs. I'd get at least an 8 Ah battery, that should last at least 8 hours.

If you don't mind spending $100 on a battery, the lithium ion batteries are great. Lighter and hold a charge better than glass mat, gel, or lead acid. I have the 12V 120c 8aH version of this battery and it lasts at least 4 hours longer than my 12V 8aH deer feeder battery. I've been recharging mine with just a regular battery tender jr charger just fine.

The only places I have seen the Lithium batteries locally in store are the Batteries Plus+ stores. Call before you go; I've had experiences where a particular location didn't have what I was looking for. My guess is that these batteries could possibly be available also at some auto parts stores, maybe some stores specializing in high end RC cars/boats, and stores specializing in ATVs, go carts, golf carts.
I have purchased these batteries via Amazon.com (good price above in my op)
There are some "off brand" or "no brand" 12 Volt Lithium ion batteries also on Amazon for a little less $, but I went with Battery Tender.

I'm running 12V 14ah deep cycle, Sealed lead acid $39.00 on my HB 999. It runs 10-12 hours on a charge and will last about 18 months of heavy use before it's time to replace.
