Saturday I took my Dad fishing at a neighbor's pond in Nevada, Texas, Nevada is just east of Lake Lavon. We each had two poles in the water, one for catfish, one of bass. After he caught a good sized bass, (I saw it jump) he lost it when the line broke as he was reeling in. I went over and helped him get his line re-rigged so he could continue. Once I walked back to my poles, I noticed my catfish line and rod/reel was gone!!!! Now there is a catfish pulling a rod and reel around the pond. I'd guess it's probably dead by now since I'm sure the rig probably got stuck on something, and unless the fish yanked hard enough, it probably is gone now. I keep replaying the pole going in the water, even though I was too far away to hear/see it happen. Dang!!!!! Addendum: Luckily it was not an expensive rig, just a cheaper rod and an Uglycast spincast reel, but I really like it! There is my Dad sitting across the pond. The rod/reel went in over to the right, by a tree far right, not in photo, in the deep end, about 12 feet. I was by the small tree 15 feet left of my Dad, working on his new setup. ...no wisdom

Drag some treble hooks through there with a heavy weight, and you might be able to snag that rod and reel back...and maybe even that catfish too. Doesn't look like it's so big that you couldn't cover the area pretty quickly.

I tried that for about 45 minutes after, with no success. I'm guessing the reel can only take so much submersion over time...

I do think that you let the fish dragging your cheap tackle into the water on purpose, so you can buy better sets. JK. It happen to me twice long time ago. I did get one set back.

I am glad it was not one of my baitcasters, that would have made me crazy, but I did like the Uglycast! ...------

You need to make up some bank rod holders. Like these. Except only mine I used 2ft piece of rebar for the spike and stainless steel hose clamps instead of the U shaped bolts in the pic. and I didn't cap off the end of the PVC. I have 3 that I made up for catfishing from the bank. Just don't pack up and leave one behind like I have done before. lol

Dang! Quite a bummer but thanks for sharing! I know it's difficult to keep eyes on everything, I can use this as a reminder. I know that feeling about something not way expensive but more on the principle of losing it. Argh!

I almost had the same thing happen to me this weekend while catfishing the Brazos. I had two rods out, one in a Walmart rod holder and the other leaning on a large Y branch. I walked over to talk to my cousin and grab some sunflower seeds when I see my rod jump about 1-2 ft off the ground. Luckily, the buffalo that took my bait wasn't very aggressive and I was able to reel him in. I'll remember to be a little more careful next time and maybe set the drag less.
Everyone should believe in something; I believe Ill go fishing.

Today my Dad and I went back, with a really long rake, and I wore my rubber, knee-high boots. I stepped at least 3 feet out, and lunged and dug around, no snagging of the pole. Obviously, the fish took it out further, and it's still there. I might take some full waders next time and try again! Oh, and it is a really long rake! ...------
