I need new reels and rods and I'm clueless.

We are going to Broken Bow for some river fishing out of our new kayaks.

I was told 6 lb line because the trout can see the line, is that a good rule of thumb? (The folks we are going with do this every year but I'm looking for any options).

We use bait casting reels now but I want something a little more user friendly for my wife to avoid birds nests...me too.

I was looking at Bass Pro and I want to keep the cost down since we just bought 4 kayaks.

I saw they have spincasting reels by Bass Pro and I saw a Shimano Sedona combo (I bit pricey but if it's that much better than the $70 Bass Pro then let me know).

Educate me please, I'm all ears.

Tim

For trout, I would use Berkley Trilene XL 4 lb line on an ultralight spinning reel. If you have a spare spool, put 6 lb Berkley Trilene XL on it as a backup. Spincasting reels will work too. The trout don't know if you are using a $20 Zebco combo or a $300 G-Loomis setup. They will know your line.

For lures try a Super Duper size 502 and Berkley Trout Worms on #8 Eagle Claw bait hook with as small of a split shot as you can find.

They've got Abu Garcia and Flueger a bit cheaper.

So am I right in saying a bait casting reel is for heavier fish and a spin casting reel is for smaller fish?

Is a 6' pole sufficient?

Oh, I meant spinning, I didn't know the spin casting was different. http://www.basspro.com/Pflueger-Trion-Spinning-Rod-and-Reel-Combo/product/1306060741407/

I would get 7' or longer ultralight rod with a decent spinning reel and 6lb line. The Spirex is a decent real for around $60. Also... Sufix has very low memory and makes great line for a spinning combo.

Any spinning reel will work. I use 4 or 6 lb Stren mono in the Moss Green color and tie the lure or hook right on. I've caught a ton of trout with a $30 Shimano Syncopate reel and a $40 light Berkley rod. That combo in your link would work, I'd get the 6'6" light rod.

Thanks guys, that really helps. I've been doing some research.

I'm thinking 7', light, with 6 lb mono.
Now if I'm fishing reds on the coast I will need a medium 7' with braided and mono at as a leader?

I ended up with a Falcon Original rod 6.5' medium-light. Not exactly what I was after but the salesman said the stiffer rod would allow me to catch some bigger fish so if I find myself fishing more for trout I'll get a lighter rod with a 1000 reel.

I got the Shimano Symetre 2500FL with yellow 10 lb Spectra Power Pro braided line and 6 lb Berkley Vanish fluorocarbon leader. I figured about a 4' leader.

Rod and reel were about $100 each which I thank my wife for, I wasn't going to spend more than $80 for the combo but she felt the better equipment may work better for us.

Does any of this rub anyone the wrong way? Will this work for the trout?

Thanks, I know helping someone this remedial is a bit taxing sometimes.

You are over thinking it. You have a spinning rod and reel with light line. Go fishing.
Thumbs up on the Falcon rod.
