I'm looking to get into some land based shark fishing. Ive read tons of stuff online as far as what reels are good but I thought I would ask here also. More than likely will be put on a 6'6"/7' boat rod. Ive been eyeballing older Penn 6/0 and 9/0. Ive heard 4/0 can do the job on smaller sharks but would like a bit of insurance if I get hooked up on something large. Ive read the newer model graphite Penn Senators are junk, but thats just what Ive read. I have also been looking at a more budget friendly Penn Fierce 8000 instead of conventional style reels. Have a few smaller Battles and they are great. What do you shark fishing guys use?

I use all Peen 114's and Peen squall 2 speed. Might want to use a kayak to get the baits out there.

I'm sporting an abu garcia BG10000 with upgraded CF drag system and 400yds of 50lb braid and a 12' okuma longitude heavy surf rod. Hopefully it will hold up to a decent fish.

Good luck casting anything with a 6/0 and a boat rod! I have that setup and cannot cast with it. I read that a guy could cast a 6/0 but it was probably with a long and flexible rod. You are going to need a kayak!

If you wading and casting for sharks good spinning or big bait casters are fine. Like xmatador said if you were yakking baits you would need big reels.

A penn squall 15 would be a good casting reel. I have 6/0,9/0,12/0. Those get a ride out with the inflatable.
