I havn't been fishing at the coast for years and am heading to port a this weekend. I'm curious the pros and cons of either and what rigging I would need (float, no float)since I'm going out there with the wife and two kids. I don't care what we catch as long as it's entertaining and hopefully get to bring home something good to eat.

Popping corks works great.

Off a pier - I prefer free lining live bait or fishing soft plastics.

Charlies pasture pier, station street pier, horace Caldwell pier. A pound of fresh dead shrimp and a package of fishbites. Fish on the bottom or under a cork. I would fish the piers especially with kids. Expect to catch pinfish, whiting, and the occasional red. Good luck and post back a report

Both types will be crowded, piers more than jetties. If the kids and wife are old enough and able to rock hop the few areas of open rocks on the s jetty, I'd be heading out on Saturday evening targeting reds. Forecast is ESE/SE 8-10 really good conditions, maybe some rain.
Second choice would be Bob Hall early and late, during day if enough cloud cover and fish the guts with fresh cut bait and fishbites, third would be packery jetties but they'll probably be the most packed of all.

The Port A piers will find you gafftop out the wazoo, don't forget there is a lot of CC channel bank fishing area on both sides of the ferry landings you can set up and fish, if you can get out to the channel with a good cast.

Bring rain gear, umbrella, and some h2o to rinse off, and make it an adventure, kids love memories of unusual trips, even if they have to ride in the bed on the way back due to being muddy/sandy/dirty, etc. wink

The gaff top were making runs during the tide changes off a pier.the jetties were getting some serious waves from an up coming storm. We found a small pier that wasn't to crowded and caught a few nice gafftop and the weather held out for us while we were there.
