I just know that the motor will charge the cranking battery and that there is a switch that you can get that will detect when the cranking battery is charged and switch over to the other batteries. My question is how effective is this and would I still need a bank charger?

You will still have to charge your trolling motor battery`s between trips.

The switch is a VSR, or voltage sensing relay, and helps in topping off a battery during the trip, but doesn't replace a quality charger as Gary stated above.

Depending on which motor you have the outboard will never recharge a battery 100% unless you run it for a really long period at wot. On board chargers are the answer to complete battery charging and conditioning.
