I have been looking into buying a fish finder with structure scan. I have pretty much decided to buy the HDS7 Gen2 with Structure scan. I know everyone likes the model they bought but what I am looking for is good performance and possibly saving some cash. If you were buying a unit today what would be your choice? Where would you buy it? I just don't want a unit that has to be in for repairs often.

The seven is good but compare the price to the hds8. It doesn't seem like much difference in size but the 8 is better for the ss

What this guy said, I have an 8 and kinda wish I had gotten a 10.

I also am in the same boat as the OP but want as big a screen as the money will allow....and wife.

I notice they now have the Gen 3 but not sure if those are worth the extra money or not.

Screen size is everything.

You're better off finding a user unit with a bigger screen than a new unit with smaller screen.

if you like fishing shallow water you should get the humminbird ... it gives a full 180 view where the lowrance only gives about 160 or so. I've always said that catfishermen should get humminbird because of that problem with lowrance. the lowrance will space out on ya if you get in the shallows ... seen them do that on two different models of lowrance now. So if you want to see fish out say 60 ft to the side in 2 ft deep water then the humminbird is the only choice and when you find them in that shallow of water they're always feeding ... no matter what the conditions are because that's what they're up there in the shallows for .... to feed.

Ok i do fish shallows a lot for sure. So with that said i was not aware of this diffrence or issue with the lowrance in the shallows. What bird model would you recomend in the 10" range as for i know nothing about there units.

I think the bird is a single transducer as well.

The pricing structure of fish finders is pretty crazy and the only reason they get away with it is because there is very little competition. There probably isn't $20 difference in the cost of materials of 5" and 12" screen...yet there is $1,000s of dollars difference in the retail price.

I would like a little more info on the lowrance spacing out in shallow water??? I run lowrance and use sidescan primarily in shallow water with no problem

been a lowrance user for years recently switched to a 1199 bird the bird is much better in shallow water also screen size matters especially when you split the screen to multi views

Get the 999...for the money it's the best bang for your buck.

The 1199 is better, but more expensive. In my opinion Humminbird hands down has clearer side imaging...and that's based on looking at lots of units side by side.

We are running the Onix 10 on the new boat...and wish we went with the ION 12.
