I a small pond or tank. I bought the property about 10 years ago. then pond did great until the big drought, then it dried completely up. since then it will not hold water. the soil on my place is about 16"-18" of good red dirt then clay. anyone know what I need to do to get back to holding water? really don't want to seal it with chemicals. do I need to dig out more?

First thing I would do would be to check for any compromise in the integrity of the dam. Look for any signs of animal damage or tree root penetration. If it was holding water before the drought, then it should also after unless something such as a critter has caused damage.

It also seems possible that it always leaked, even before the drought, but you had enough rainfall to compensate for the leak(s). If that is the case, then you may have a problem related with original construction and/or soils.

It sounds like a tricky situation. If you can't find any obvious animal/plant damage to the dam, then you may want to call in an expert. Good luck.

It is possible like Meadowlark suggested that it leaked before, but was not noticeable. The drought just enhanced the the ability of the leak to become more by allowing the ground to dry and retain any moisture. That inability to maintain its integrity, IMO is the result of not holding water. I would look to see if an area(s) behind the dam that seem to be wetter than normal (in comparison to previous years).

The other thing i would look for as was suggested is for burrows from an animal. The water is moving, the hard part will be to determine where and why. It may bee a good idea to have a pond builder that know your ground and come look.

Thanks guys. I have checked the damn for leaks but haven't found anything. this is frustrating. I had stocked and lost all my fish, now have a grandson I would love to be able to take him fishing at the pond but can't. Thanks again, perhaps I will call in an expert.
