I have been watching Steve Douglas drift Fishing YouTube videos. He does a drift called the suspend drift. I have been out with Tom Gravely and a couple of other good Blue cat fishermen and have yet to see one of them do this. Is it just a Yankee way to fish? Steve seems to do very well with it.

I have tried it with a little bit of luck. I can only do it when the water is like glass because the wind on a pontoon makes it hard to control the speed

Many times I have put one rod out when drifting with no weight and the bait hanging about a foot down- I have caught fish but not every time - Caught blues and other species-
What has happed to you does not define who you are-
HOW you react to what happens to you DOES!

I'd like to know if people suspend drift a lot too.
Steve fishes mainly rivers so I'm not sure traditional drifting techniques would work as well for him, though I have seen him drag baits a few times. He won't use a box anchor either because of high current and trashy bottoms. Sure makes the take downs look good when one hammers it suspended.
I don't see enough fish suspending usually for me to put a lot of time into suspending bait. Even after the thermocline kicks in I'll usually fish points or flats above the thermocline depth and find fish on bottom.

I thought it would be a great technique when the thermocline sets up good.

it works but a lot of reel action to change depths as you go. good for summertime. mainly for rivers too but it an work in lakes big flats for the lazy fisherman and contours if you like drops and ledges

Its really common when fishing rivers, because you will use your trolling motor to follow ledges and around points. Lakes like Texoma where the ledeges are big, you can do this kinda fishing but you have to use a trolling motor to control your depth as you follow the ledge. In the summer here on Texoma I will supend my baits off the bottom when chasing cats, pretty much as if i was striper fishing with live bait. It works well for me throughout the summer, but I dont do any drifing I will anchor on the ledges and humps.

I have had decent results suspend fishing during the summer months although just like Catdaddy Jr. I anchor. Only fish I have managed to catch suspend drifting are strippers.

We do a ton of suspended drifting in the summer for hybrids. We catch very few blue catfish fishing like that. Many times I will drop one or two rods down to just off the bottom and catch a ton of cats there. Moral to the story is I know the cats are down there but it's very rare that they bite the suspended baits. Flatheads are a different story. We catch a ton of them drifting suspended live bait.

I'll do it on days with very little wind and have had decent success. But like mentioned above, you have to keep adjusting the depth.

I do it pretty often in the summer when I'm using the trolling motor on those little to no wind days. It's worked great for me. As a matter of fact I have had some days they prefer that presentation. I'll drag 4 or 5 baits out the back of the boat and suspend others down the sides. Several times the suspended baits out fish the ones I'm dragging.

That is the preferred method for catching catfish on the Tennessee River.
He is truly a sick individual.
