I primarily fish for Black Bass, and it has been a long time since I've fished for sandies/white bass. I'll be fishing in a lake from a boat and need advice about what spinning rod length and action and line size to use for whites. The whites are not very large on average. After watching some youtube videos, looks like 2" grubs on 1/8 oz. jig head is what I'll start with. Thanks in advance for any suggestions concerning rod and line size.

Ouch, asked a simple question, 32 people read post, not a single reply. Kinda cold over here on the Whites forum.

Sorry nobody is commenting. I'm no expert and would consider myself an amateur. But for conversation sake I use 6.5 medium rod. 12lb line and mostly spinner bait. Which lake are you going to be fishing on?

Flying, I fish on Lake Austin, the lake where grass carp removed ALL vegetation. I don't think there is a large population of whites, but from conversations at the ramp, I hear of guys talking about catching a few. Some are even trolling now that black bass fishing is so poor.

When you say spinnerbaits, are you talking about little inline spinners similar to Mepps?

Call Mike at Moe's Tackle. He will get you hooked up. Tell him what lake you fish and he will know what they are hitting. Link is in my signature line.

Thanks Rockwall. I have several spinning rods with different actions and am sure one of them will be fine. I just wanted to know what you guys thought would be the best action, etc. and about what line strength to use.

Yes, mepps mostly. Also I'm using a BPS Pro Qualifier baitcaster reel. I do use crank bait occasionally depending upon what's going on. I'm on Cedar Creek Reservoir.

Lake Austin is an awesome recreational lake. I've never fished there though. I'm from Marble Falls so I've spent a lot of time on most of the lakes in the area. My friend had a cabin on Lake Austin in the cove across from the Hula Hut about 12 years ago. I was jetskiing a lot back then. We used to go the pecan orchard on the north end of the lake and snack. Ski shores burgers.

Not so fond memories of APD, LCRA, Travis County, TPWD, Emma Long Park Rangers. You could go up the lake and see four five different water patrols. It got to be a drag at times dealing with them.

Light action rod with an appropriate reel using 4-6 lb line. In addition to the tacke from Moes, pick up some Mepps Aglia spinners.

I use a 6.5' rod, medium action 6 lb test, light green color line. I've caught almost all of my sandies this year on a clown colored rooster tail. Hope that helps And good luck.

I'm definitely not the most experienced sandbass fisherman here, all the guys on here catch more than I do. But since I only started fishing again ~3 years ago, I was recently in your same position.

I use primarily a 6'6" Ugly Stick Lite M with a H20 Mettle and an Abu Black Max. I would say whatever you are most comfortable with is best - you don't need fancy setups for whites. Usually spooled with 10lb mono, although I do have a spinning reel with braid I use sometimes.

Most baits (at least around me) are whatever resembles the shad during that particular season - 1/4-3/4 oz slabs & spoons, inline spinners, rat-l-traps, crankbaits, etc. I have caught on some plastic swimbaits, but I'm not as successful with them as a lot of the guys here. Like I said - anything that resembles the shad typically does best for me.

You guys provided just what I needed to know. Didn't think I was going to get a single reply for a while, then got a lot of great information. Thanks very much.

I have those exact two setups and I love them. The black max is my first bait caster and its now my favorite rod n reel. Just thought I would throw that out there.
