Took another trip over the the OK side of the lake. It went well last week with the big waves driving fish into the cove. The water temps crashed 4 degrees to 58 due to the cold front. There were zero fish shallow. An old man and a boy met were leaving just as I got there and announced they got a skunk for the day. The big waves were rolling in with a gray sky and it did not look promising. That said, the stripers were really hitting well. I caught 7 in about 3 1/2 to four hours with 4 being overs. Lost another three due to the waves creating slack line.

None of these fish are really big. I was using a smaller Bomber Fat Free Shad that normally I catch crappie on. I think if you used some bigger baits you could catch some of the bigger stripers. The ones I got go from 17 - 23 inches. I got the bigger overs after I had these two in the box late in the day.

Kept the big Goo ( Drum) because one of my friends from Liberia is always complaining about how the striper fillets I give him are not fishy enough and how they eat the skin, fins and head back home. I figured this nasty drum will fix that issue.

Been reading reports of lots of dead fish at Texoma. Hate to open myself up to hate mail but I'm going to have to call BS on that. I don't believe it. I've not seen a dead fish in two trips. Besides, there are thousands of cormorants and pelicans all over the OK side. If a dead fish was floating it would be eaten instantly, so no one could see it. Shad balls were thick all day and they would be affected by golden algae first.

My trip almost ended as fast as it started. I hadn't gone 100 yards before I hooked the bigger striper in the picture. When I landed him in the net he was still full of energy and wrapped himself in the rubber Frabill net. When I went to untangle him he managed to stick one of the treble hooks in my thumb. As many of you guys that read my posts know, I complain about the hooks that come on Bomber lures and swap them for premium hooks. In this case they were no 6 Gamakatsu. It instantly went in past the barb. If that was not bad enough, one of the barbs had pierced through the net. All this time the striper is still flopping and extracting painful revenge on me. I finally got him settled down and into the cooler. I pushed the treble though and cut the barb off. The upside on those Gamakatsu hooks is they are so sharp you hardly feel it. It's like a razor. The picture this morning makes it look more like a snakebite. It's pretty sore though. Thought about taking a pic before getting it out but decided against it. I think I'm about to set a record for the most hookings. This is number 4.

Striper fishing seems to be real good at Texoma now. The fish seemed to like a very fast presentation. I was trying to catch crappie and tried to troll slow but could not maintain the 1.5 MPH speed I needed due to the crazy wind. Most of these fish hit as I was moving from one place to another at 2 - 2.5 mph. I spent about half the day checking out spots where I had caught crappie last year and those spots have no fish yet. These stripers were staging in 20-30 feet off points but would come up to 10 feet and hit the lures I was trolling.

Good report. Think about trying the " line pop " method for hook removal and, most important, don't forget Tetanus shot

I'll look up the line pop method. Got the tetanus shot last year so I think I'm good. If this wind will give me a break I can go to live bait and quit the crankbaits.

Yes it does hurt. I've done this 4 times now. Only once did I go to the ER and get them to take it out. I was at Pk and it's a long drive to Mineral Wells, but it was a no 4 hook that went straight in. No chance to push it through and cut it off. Worked on it for a long time before giving up.

PK: about 8 years ago we were throwing in rock creed for crapie. My grandson (14) at the time buried a roadrunner to the curve in my chin. We used fishing line to pull it out. I was sitting on a bass seat and fell off it. LOL Also we were trolling on Texoma Easter and running 3-3.4 MPH and catching fish. They seemed to really want it fast. I used to work out of Mineral wells. The company I worked for had 150 wells in the area. fish

That sounds like a painful hooking.

Monday the stripers hit fast moving lures hard. My freezer is full of striper so tomorrow I am going to target crappie on the Texas side. Unless I kill them the stripers need to be released for a while.

I'm going to try for some crappie later today at Texoma. It's too cold right now for me to be on the lake. Should warm up later today. Until they go shallow I seldom catch the little buggers. Doesn't seem to do much good to buy minnows at Texoma or PK, as the sandies and small stripers will eat them all.
