Was taking some friends out and departed early to hit the bait shop for some live bait (their choice). Both bait shops around Canyon were closed until 7 AM. It was 6:15 and my friends decided they did not want to wait and would be happy using lures.

Got on the water right at sunrise and it was over cast most of the day until about 1 PM. Perfect weather.

Fishing was slow most of the day. We caught several dinks. Used cranks, spinner baits, and top water but a wacky worm was the real pay off. Caught several keepers fishing the point of Mystic Shores. Could have done a lot better there fishing a T-rigged worm next to the brush but my friends are not that experienced and teaching them on the fly has its challenges. They caught on fast to the wacky rig since the hook is exposed and the fish practically hook themselves.

Largest fish of the day came on a square bill and it was the only fish I caught on a crank. Hauled a lot of water with a crank for only one keeper.

I tried a Pop-R mid-morning for a long time also since the wind calmed down and it was perfect for a top water around the brushy points. Got the big nada on a Pop-R and I was really surprised not even a dink would take a look at it.

Lots of pleasure boaters hitting the water starting around 11 AM. To the ski boat that buzzed me in the cove at Mystic Shores: You could have just idled up and I would have told you what I was using if that was the idea of blasting past me close enough I could have made a cast and hit you. I sure hope this is not a sign of things to come this year.

Came off the water at 4 PM. I'll spare you the detailed ramp rant and crazy stuff happening there. I'll forewarn you that you better be prepared to see a lot of stupid stuff and be prepared to wait. People seem to think it's cool to take over the ramp to prep their boat to launch and prep their boat for departing. Is that how it works now?

Even with an overall slow day of fishing on the water, it sure beats being at work.

Being older and retired I haven't had to deal with those shenanigans in years, at least not as often as I once had to since I now only fish weekdays, and my trips are fewer as it warms up, I can see that those same people that used to do it to me 30 years ago, have had kids and grand kids that they've taught them well on how to be just like them.
I guess with even more population growth now than just a few years back, it's probably safe to say the problem isn't going away anytime soon.

We had our little tournament there yesterday. A friend of mine won with 11lbs 11oz with two nice smallies in the bag. I could only muster three for weigh in but I had a 2lb9oz in the mix. It was a skinny fish that should have weighed over three.
I was a difficult day trying to stay on spot with that wind. My best fish came off a crankbait in about 12 ft over one of those "fish attractors". For the most part it was a dink fest. I managed a few on texas rig along some of the protected bluffs, all but one were dinks.

Thanks for the info Otis. It's very rare I need live bait. I'll do business with them the next time I am in need.

Jesse, I was on the water that day too, had about 12lbs best five and a ton of Dinks. They were definitely on the chew. There was a sea plane practicing landings in the main lake, can't say I've seen that before. Something has to be done about the boaters there and on Dunlap and LA. Its past ridiculous, well into sublime. If they did the things they do with a car they would no longer have a license.

I dare you to tie on a spider jig and head over to north park or overlook park. Find 18 feet of water, let the jig touch down. See what happens.

P.S. The cheap grubs from Barlow's work just as good as the expensive ones.

Dang it man, I had one tied on and never threw it. That is much deeper than I thought though, does the spawn seem to be over? I was fishing this one awesome looking spot where the trees were 30' deep and the tops were almost to the top of the water. Running a crankbait through those tops just waiting for the lake record to smack it! Instead nothing smacked it. frown and that freaking hump by what I think is lookout park or Comal park (not sure of the name)??? Should just be covered with fish but.... bang

I also looked for the 'drilla but I never graphed any, might be a bit cold still.

Thanks for the spider jig tip. flehan
