If you are able to bring it to Belton, with weather permitting it would take me no more than 2 days to remove the old carpet and put in the new. With carpet, glue, labor, and removing the old carpet, how does $250 sound?

Hi y'all...In the past I have been getting my carpet from Lowe's but I am just getting my business started. I am looking around to find the best price and best carpet. I do not object to anyone wanting to supply their own carpet or to ask for a certain ounce of carpet. I hope that I am able to get something started. Thanks for everyones replies and interest, it is allowing me to follow a dream.

Merry Christmas to all and a happy new year. I would venture out to say give this guy a chance. I have a 1995 skeeter that I recently replaced some of the compartments with HOME DEPOT marine grade carpet in Black. (They do not have every color).

This carpet is thicker than the carpet that came in my boat and works just fine especially when your carpet is tattered, shredded, or missing.

HAWGHUNTER08 should not come on to this guys topic and making a reply like he has. I would not pay attention to any negative comments about this guys venture.

Good Luck Belton,

John

I dont believe I made a negative reply about him... just the choice of carpet he uses... Its not a long lasting carpet... He can shoot me a message and i'll let him know where to get carpet for his venture delivered to his front door that is a better grade carpet and much easier to work with then the garbage that home depot has... I have used both..

I wish him well... there is money to be made doing it if he does it right.

Apparently a moderator felt it was negative to take it off.

I guess best thing to do is send the guy a PM to try to help him out. Home Depot, Lowes carpet probably works for some people while BASS cat or Ranger works for others.

I personally would buy my carpet from a retailer but since I was doing a quick job I went to my local Home Depot.

Also to do a bass boat that is 20ft from top to bottom with every nook and cranny costs about $1200 to $1500 which includes material, and labor. It is a tedious job and takes a lot to get the old glue off if you do the job right.

I am just about finished recarpeting my 20' bass boat and it will be the last time I attempt that! It is extremely time consuming and tedious work! I realize it is my first time, but I already have over 30 hrs. labor in it! Give this guy a chance, cause if you are like me, you will not do it yourself but once! Also, my deck lids were tight with 20oz. carpeting and I went back with 20oz., so I do not recommend going heavier than 20oz. unless you want extra supertight fitting lids! Oh, and if you happen to forget and cut a piece of carpet with the grain running differently than the other pieces, it looks like [censored]! You MUST have the grain of carpeting running the same way on ALL pieces. My boat looks great, but I would not do it again for $1,000.00!

McCloud,

I love your post. People do not realize how much time it takes to do a boat properly. You are looking at a full day's work taking the lids off, striping them, and taking the carpet out of the rest of the boat. A full days work in laying the carpet on the lids, and a day and a half to put the carpet in the boat and put everything back together. Not to mention a couple of hours for clean up. For a 20 foot boat with 12-14 lids, it would be a 4 day job working full time.

Now then, I've stayed out of this thread until now. The carpet at Lowes and HomeDepot is eh, ok. It is only 14-16 ounce carpet at the best. I didn't see HawgHunter's orginal post, but he is correct in what he is saying about the quality of the carpet.

However, the standard in the industry is made by Bayshore or Dorsett. The vast majority of the boat companies use this particular carpet. Bayshore is the Exact same as Dorset, only 8 feet in width vs, 6 feet like Dorsett. Some boat companies like Ranger, will use a thicker shag on their carpet, and it can vary from 20-24 ounce, However their lids have to be build for that grade of carpet. You cannot put any heavier carpet in your boat than what the original carpet was installed in that boat. Otherwise there will be an issue closing lids. Most boats cannot use anything more than 18, or their lids will not shut properly.

So regardless of what type of carpet you use, get a higher quality carpet, (even if it is only 16 ounce). It will last much longer than a cheap 16 ounce carpet. Even at 2-3 bucks a foot more, you are only talking about a difference of $40-$80 in materials. That isn't that much of a compromise when doing a big project like this one.

John,

I wish you the best and PLEASE take all the carpet jobs you can. I hate doing them and they are the biggest pain in the arse. So I hope you treat these guys great and do a knock out job for them!

I've been in the flooring business for 33 years. And yes I have done my share of boats. The only way I would do them, was to have the customer to strip all carpet and take all lids off. I would still charge any where from 450-800 depending on the boat. I stayed busy until I couldn't keep up with my other work. I did alot for a dealer friend who took alot of tradeins. Alot of tedious work to do it right. To the guy who made the orginial post all I will say is do a very good job and you will have plenty of work.

The best thing to use is contact cement.

Thanks for the encouragement. Please, send others my way if you would like. My girlfriend was at the gas station this morning and there was a Ranger next to her filling up. She walks over and starts checking out their decks, ha ha. How hilarious. She is my VP.

Pictures coming soon

Good luck DeSean

UPDATE!! We are no longer getting our carpet from Lowe's. We have started an account that enables us to get it directly from a boat shop. This is great news for anyone that may have been reluctant because of Lowe's carpet.

Again, we are located in Belton, TX and we would love y'alls business!

Thanks

I don't see any price ranges or starting prices? I have a zx202 skeeter with all the deck being lids. I have already bought the carpet (8' foot wide and 24' long) and just don't have the time. I am not using the boat anymore I have a newer one. So you can take your time. E-mail me some figures.
Thanks ddacable@aol.com

BADean... He should have fun with your boat.... Your Skeeter has one of the hardest floors to carpet that I have ever done. The step down feature in those newer Skeeters are a real PAIN to do correctly....
