This morning I headed down to my favorite bayou which is close to home. Disappointed to find dead bass, sunfish along the creek. The picture shows an example. The water has an oily look to it. Was able to walk far upstream and caught a couple healthy looking bass, but at the same place there was a bass, pale in color, swimming around, looking almost dead. So called and reported the kill to 24-hr TPWD hotline today, and haven't heard anything back yet-though it is Good Friday and it may take a while to get a hold of the biologist.

Question: Does anyone have any similar experience in reporting a fish kill, and if so how did it work out? Should I also contact EPA?

I wouldn't call the EPA if I was pale in color and looking as if I was dead. They will blame your lead sinker.

EPA will probably blame it on the outboard motor exhaust and make us all have to use electric motors and pay a big fee for battery disposal. Best leave the tree huggers out of it and let nature take it's course.

I agree. The EPA finds a way to blame the closest and most convenient person. That would be you. The only person more crooked, evil and sinister than an EPA agent is an ATF Agent, and I'm not sure they are too far behind.

Yes I agree and left the EPA out of it.

Sorry for the delayed f/u email. Called TPWD and reported the kill on a Friday and got a call back on Monday (it was Easter weekend). Talked to a biologist and explained the situation and she took a small team out to investigate several days later. The findings were low dissolved oxygen levels in spots where the fish had died. She could not explain what caused the low levels, but did mention that the levels were lowest downstream of a bridge. Nearby the bridge there is also very small sewage plant (about the size of a 1/8 of a typical backyard). So she was very nice and also reported the findings to the city. Overall, very impressed and grateful for TPWD's prompt response,.

Several weeks later I fished the stream after some good rains. Same scenario with no fish downstream of bridge but no dead fish floating around. Upstream of the bridge I caught several small, healthy looking, largemouth bass. Going to fish it sometime in the next couple of weeks and see if things have changed.

Hard to conclude if the kill was due to someone dumped stuff off the bridge, sewage release or natural causes.
