Last time I went to the spillway the release was around 167 cfs and I only caught 4 keepers the entire day. With this new water release would the fishing increase or will it stay the same? Where are all these fish coming from? From the release or were they originally in the creek. Thanks for any advice.

I went below the dam a month ago when the gates were wide open and never got a bite and the only thing that I saw y hat was caught was a couple buffalo. Never know, thats why its called fishing instead of catching. Time of day, moon phase and barometric pressure play a big role in the bite.

Dose anyone know how those fish get in river? Do they just fall out of the spillway? Has anyone been at the spillway in the past couple days. I have been there couple times trying to catch some fish but never been able to catch a lot. I see guys next to me putting in fish all the time. Dose this spillway run out of fish lol? I have not been there for few weeks now so I don't know of any news. Any advice would be great! Thanks.

I think those fish came down from the main lake. Please feel free to correct me if anyone think that I am wrong. I talked to the GWs and they tell me the same thing. If you look at the hybrids especially, all of them have some sort of damage, cuts, bruises to their body, the eye area and especially the lower jaw. I've noticed this on all the hybrids we've caught under the spillway since I've been fishing there for the last 20+ years. I don't see it on the hybrids that we catch on main lake.

Also, we were there this past Sunday, and the bites has really slowed down quite a bit from the previous week. You can still catch your limit, but it would have taken much longer. The other thing I noticed too were they were biting a lot more on crawfish than my usual go to baits of live shad and/or perch. I would assume that the action should pick up more soon (if not already) since the water release is more significant this week than the previous couple of weeks.

If you plan to go, I would recommend getting a pound of live crawfish or so in addition to some live bait if you can get your hands on some. I am just surprised that the shad have not been as thick this time of the year as in previous years but again we have been getting a lot of rain so I don't know what to tell you.

Please give us an update if you do go this weekend since I would like to take another trip or 2 up there before we start hitting the surfs for some saltwater action. Good luck and tight lines!!!

Great report Spec Chaser. Thanks for sharing.

As I understand the fish come from both the lake and downstream from the river. That is normally the reason why fishing doesn't get good until there is a high flow rate over a period of many days. The bait fish will swim upstream because of the high oxygen levels in the water at the dam. The predator fish will follow.

If I had to venture a guess I would think that the majority of the hybrids are coming through the dam. I would also suspect that a lot of catfish may be coming all the way up from the Brazos. I may be completely wrong about that, so if anyone wants to chime in I would like to hear your thoughts.

Going there today with my son again. It's been flowing hard for the pass days. I will bring back a report. Hopefully the fishing will be good. For the crawfish is that only hybrid bait? Where do the whites come from?Dose the spillway close when there is rain? Thanks for any advice.

Good luck today SpeciesFisherman!

You know, I haven't seen that many white bass being caught below the spillway this year. There have been more hybrids than there are white bass. It's like a 10X more hybrids being caught than white bass that I've been this year.

Regarding the crawfish, we've caught white bass on them as well but the hybrids love the crawfish! The other thing is try to get some bass minnows if you can find a place that sells them. Those crappie minnows are a little too small, but I've seen many hybrids being caught with them as well if you fish closer to the current flow vs. further down from the spillway.

Anywho, good luck again and anxious to see how you guys do today!

Is it a long or difficult walk from parking to the spillway? I have trouble on rough terrain or long walks

You will have to walk down about 50 steps or so. Then there is a path leads around the spillway to the other side. It is an easy walk on the path for the most part. Most of the best fishing is right there off the rocks which are extremely difficult to walk on. You can continue down the path a ways and find an easier place to fish from. There is another path which leads down the bank on the near side but it is a little more difficult to walk on.

Did pretty well got about 12 white bass. All on top-water. It looks like it might slow down but you never know.

Top water action sounds great to me. Were you bank fishing or chasing them in a boat? What type of lure were you using?
