It was a fun day Peter I use the same flies and lures on the lake that I use in the creeks. There are areas at Welsh, Birch, Yegua, Rocky, in front of the dam and at Overlook parks with good bank fishing. Anywhere there is shad close to the bank you can usually find white bass. Most people wear waders. As the sun comes up the shad and white bass usually move to slightly deeper water. Lots of people use little georges, roadrunners, rooster tails and pet spoons in addition to plastics. Most of the people you see will cast net the shad early in the morning and throw them with a heavy weight.

I went back out to the lake again this evening. There were no birds working, not much shad around or white bass surfacing. There were a couple guys fishing in the same spot as the other fisherman were fishing the day before. They were catching a few on live shad but I was not having very good luck. I caught only 2. But as soon as the sun set on the horizon at 7:45 the white bass turned on. I caught them on every other cast for about 30 minutes then it slowed down again.
I caught one of the younger group of hybrids tonight. It was 16.5 inches. I knew it was a hybrid right away as it started stripping line. It made 3 hard runs before it tired out. Man I love catching hybrids on the fly rod. This younger group is big enough to put up a great fight already.
Tomorrow I'm headed out to the fish a private ranch on the Devils river for 4 days. I can't wait to get into some small mouth bass.

Donfromaustin, the yegua creek is flooded right now, so no to your question. Plus the white bass spawn is almost over, one can still find small males and crappie in the creek though. But late Feb and all through March is the best time for the white bass spawn up creeks or rivers from a lake. Most of the white bass have returned to the lakes and are feeding heavy on shad.

Went to welch park yesterday evening. Got there around 7. Didn't get a bite until sunset. Ended up with 5 keepers in about 15-20 minutes. The wind was very strong out of the south. No visible signs of shad, but that maybe due to the big waves. Birds weren't doing too much either. Guys semi close-by were using live shad, and had about the same luck as I did. No telling what this front will do to them, and I'm not about to find out. Not in this weather anyway. FYI, stay off of hwy. 60 if coming from college station. Chilifest traffic.

Wow, lucky J-Moe! I've always wanted to fish the Devils River. Good luck. Thanks Jared. The wind was blowing about 20 mph each day and it got cold on Saturday so we cut the trip short. Fishing was off a bit. I caught about 15 smallmouth. About half were between 2 and 2.5 lbs. Those were the first I had ever caught. They are awesome fighters. I caught several LMB. The biggest was 3.85 lbs. I caught 3 Rios, including a new Devils River record that was 10 inches and 0.79 lbs. I caught several redbreast and longear sunfish as well. Other than catching my first smallmouth bass the highlight of the trip was catching a huge common carp. I set a new Devils River record by catching a 26.2 lb. carp. It took me 48 minutes to land it. All fish were caught on my 4 wt and 5 wt fly rods.

I went out to the main lake this morning. I fished a couple spots with no luck. There were a couple guys fishing about 150 yards away from me. One of them was waiving me over. I went down there. He mistook me for another friend of his. They were on the white bass though so I joined them.
We caught fish on about every other cast from 8 AM to 10 AM. I caught several hybrids and a pure stripper as well. It was a great morning.

When did they stock strippers? I know only about hybrids.

I am giving my shop an overhaul, or one might say a face lift, all new siding and replacing roof. Yard work is also something taking away my time. I have never seen so many weeds and it's weeds I have never even seen before. I know I should be out fishing, but this cool weather is great for the work I'm doing, nice and cool.

When did they stock strippers? I know only about hybrids. They never stocked strippers but it was definitely a stripper. Solid, dark, unbroken lines and a long slender body. I suspect it just got mixed in with the hybrids.

Went out to same place, same time, with same results as last Friday. I caught one of those striper as well. Fit j-moes description to a t. I thought it looked different, but like fishy, I didnt think they stocked striper in Somerville. The explanation makes sense tho. I think I need to find a different job, one that will allow me to go in the morning. Either that or become a better fisherman.
