Does anyone ever fish the first rig out of the Galveston Channel just North of the North Jetty? If so what time of the year and what kind of catches?

Several years ago I paddled my yak out to a platform that seems to fit your description. After a long paddle I got there and there were several boats parked along side. Word was nobody was catching anything. I didn't catch anything either. When I drifted back in I caught Atlantic Sharpnose and Blacktips all along the way. Afterwards I was thinking that that rig would probably have to be the most over fished rig on the Texas coast. It is the closest offshore rig to the largest port. I would be interested to know if anyone has had any luck there, but it would seem that there would be way too few fish to divide up between way too many fishermen.

Thanks for the long awaited reply Sharkinator. My father purchased a bay boat last year and we have fished the rig 2 times. I know how the fishing is from my experiece but I wanted to know others views but obviously there arent any other than yours. The first time we did ok but not amazing. We caught 1 slot red, 1 4ft shark, 5 Sand Trout and several atlantic Spadefish with 1 being trophy size and the rest not too much. The next time we went out there we did amazing several nice Spanish Mackerals in the 16-20 inch range, 1 19inch Spotted Trout, 3 Black Drum, 3 Stingrays, 1 Gafftop, a few Atlantic Spadefish, and several breakoffs. Each time there were only 2-3 boats. One guy fought a Stingray for 45 minutes and as he got it to the boat it broke off. He said it was the biggest Stingray he had ever seen. Anyways I qualified it as a good trip. Wether we catch alot of fish or not, its always nice to get out there.

Glad to hear someone catches something out there. It must have been rather picked over by the time I got there on that particular day.
