I am buying a used bass buster and plan to put a trolling motor on it. The current owner probably doesnt have a title for it. From what i understand you need the title to get the boat licensed. Do i really need it licensed, and if so how do i get it without the title?

If its not currently registered and titled in his name walk away. Many have learned the hassles are not worth it. It's almost impossible to get it done after the fact.
non titled boats are for buyers fishing private water.

I just went through that buying my boat. The guy I was buying from used it on private water so it wasn't a problem to have the title transfer. He never did get the title transfer in his name so when I went to buy it, it became a problem. I called texas parks and they said he can't legally sell the boat if he has not yet transfer the title in his name. So we had to track down the originally owner then have her sign some paper work. Then the guy had to pay for sales taxe and some more fee which was a total of like 100. I was told by texas parks that the title of a boat needs to be transfer in the new owners name ever time the boat is sold. So good thing he was the second owner cause if not we would of had to track down who ever had it in their position

I bought my Bass Raider used on craigslist and when I bought it, it had never been titled. As long as the boat hasn't been titled before you can just tell them that you are the original owner and that you've just always used it in your pond but now you're wanting to take it to the lake. I had to do a tracing of my serial number and sign some papers but that was it. Now its legal to go on any lake.

I tried my best to get title to a used 2 man pontoon. It is just not worth the effort. Too many hurdles. Like the man said if no clear title walk away.

That is one law Texas needs to change. 10' and under bass buster type boats and inflatable pontoons powered by trolling motors should be exempt.
