Hey guys, I'm going to be headed down to Freeport in a couple days to go surf fishing and was wondering what's biting and what it's biting on. I would like to catch a good fighting fish like a large Redfish or Black Drum, maybe a small shark here and there. Thanks for any advice you give me, anything helps.

Fresh shrimp on the bottom about the size of you thumbnail on a 2/0 size hook will catch whiting.for redfish and drum try to get crab. Crack it in half and hook it at the socket. Also for redfish use cut mullet and mullet heads. Hope this helps I will be headed down in the morning. And will post when I get back

Peeled shrimp on the bottom to catch some bait. Cut the bait up for the bull reds. I like to use circle hook and everytime I have a red strike with a bottom rig. Always hooked.

How far out do I need to go? And how big of piece of bait for the redfish?

The water was pretty cold so I put on waders and waded out to about waist deep water. I was using fresh dead shrimp on the bottom. It was low tide all day until 6:14 or around there. All I caught Was a small catfish. I had my rod bend a few times but could not get the hookup. The trick I found was go about 1.5 hours before a high tide and get your bait out there. I was only about 30 peso yards off the beach due to the water being so cold. I will be back to try again in 2 weeks.

I went out to Bryan Beach in Freeport today, started out using frozen cooked shrimp that you buy in the store to try to catch some whiting. Caught 1 real quick in between the first and second sand bars as it was too cold for me to go further out, then I cut that whiting in half to use for my shark rod, after that didn't work, I cut it into much smaller pieces and threw out in the same place I was catching whiting just for the heck of it, and not 30 seconds after it hit the water I caught a 10 pound Redfish. I tried for another couple hours and caught 3 more whiting, but that's all. Thanks guys for the advice and for helping me land my first redfish.

Nice fish, most of my big ones came in on a #1 or #1/0 circle hook with smaller bait pieces. Can't explain it since everybody else catches them on bigger baits, but it never works for me.
