My wife's family lives in Beaumont so I get the opportunity to fish Sabine Lake a couple times every year. I know how to fish the flounder run in the fall, but I've never been successful during our spring break trip, which is about to happen in a couple days. I fish at Mesquite Point park on Treasure Island and have been skunked every single spring trip.

So far I've tried shrimp on a bottom rig, lots of different lures, and gulp shrimp on a popping bobber and never gotten so much as a bite. I put in a solid 30 hours every Spring trying to catch a fish there, but have had zero luck.

Some advice on technique at this spot or even a different spot would be greatly appreciated. This is the first year in 5 where I'm debating whether to bring my fishing gear and I probably won't even bother unless I've got some intel.

Also, I'd be VERY open to going out with any locals who might be fishing Sabine Lake this weekend. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE hit me up! I only get to fish salt water twice a year and it's horribly discouraging to be unsuccessful on these trips. Thanks!

No intel on spots, as I only fished Sabine once with a guide and a boat, but you may not have been fishing were the fish were eating. Looking at a map, it seems that fish should be on the area, and you should have at least hooked into something.
Try fishbites too, gulp shrimp/paddle tail on a jig head. Are there other fisherman hitting the same spots? I would ask them what they use if there is anyone else around.

How did you do fishing?

I grew up catching flounder on Sabine. Mainly in the summers, but may work now. You can catch some out around islands or pleasure island, but I like to go over to the Louisiana side. Fish outlets coming out of the marsh. When the tide starts going out fish up against the bank around the outlet. Those flounder will stack right outside the current waiting on their meal. Our favorite way to catch them was a twist tail grub jig under a cork. Usually Chartreuse/yellow. Just set it right off the bottom. You can tip the hook with shrimp if you want to increase your odds.

The Spring break trip was a bust, but I had a lot of luck in November when I returned. Caught all kinds of fish and some really good ones. The biggest difference I made in my fishing was that I studied tied charts and nailed down what times I wanted to be on the water and was a lot more successful that way. This last November trip had poor forecasts for fishing from the tide charts, but I still fished those times that were supposed to be at least a chance of catching a fish or two and did manage to do that. 1 fish an hour is still way better than getting skunked.

Try fishing the north levy on Pleasure Island. Just head the opposite direction from Walter Humphrey Park. When you get off of MLK bridge take a right. You'll hit a stop sign at the Marina. If you take a right at the Marina then you'll hit some steps. There is good fishing there sometimes. But to hit the north levy keep going straight at the stop sign and you'll go down a road that curves. When you hit the next stop sign you'll take a left and go down a bumpy road. That'll lead towards the north levy. At the north levy there are some pipes that cross under the road. That's the spot to fish. You can also catch specks on the rocks with a cork and shrimp or gulp. You'll catch all kinds of fish there. Mainly best when the tide is heading out. Good luck.
