This new trailer inspection sounds tough. All trailers over 4500 pounds will have brakes and breakaway switches. Anybody's boats fall into over the 4500 pound limit? Farm trailers have to do it also. No exceptions after March 1st.

Not a boat but my travel trailer is well over. I don't think you'll be able to renew your registration without it. And finding a nearby place to do the inspection where I can actually pull my 35' trailer into will be difficult. Just another attempt to regulate stupidity at the cost of responsible citizens. barf

You want to make money? Get certified to inspect and work out a deal with some rv parks and rv/boat storage facilities, then charge a convenience fee to inspect on-site.

Gonna be interesting. A lot of trailers ain't gonna pass without spending big bucks. Inspection stations are required to have a truck capable of towing all trailers. That is gonna cost them big bucks.
Here is what is to be inspected. Note no break a way switch.

05.06 Inspect All Trailers, Semitrailers, Pole Trailers, or Mobile Homes Exceeding 4,500 Pounds Actual Gross Weight or Registered Weight For: (Listed in suggested order of inspection) Refer to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, if required.

* Check for evidence of Financial Responsibility on towing vehicle

1. Brakes (system) (If gross weight exceeds 4,500 pounds)
2. Tires
3. Wheel Assembly
4. Safety Guards or Flaps (if four tires or more on rearmost axle) Pole trailers exempt.
5. Tail Lamps (2)
6. Stop Lamps (2)
7. License Plate Lamp (1)
8. Rear Red Reflectors (2)
9. Turn Signal Lamps
10. Clearance Lamps
11. Side Marker Lamps
12. Side Reflectors
13. Side Marker Lamps and Reflectors (30 feet or more in overall length)
(Refer to Reference Section as per lighting diagrams and as applicable to the particular trailer being inspected.)
14. Serial or Vehicle Identification Number
15. Window Tint.

Wow gonna be a money grab for sure. Talk about the back logs on getting things fixed if you don't do it yourself.

Yep, going to either be a bunch of new axles installed, trailers getting scrapped or a buunnccchhhhhh of illegal trailers being towed around. Just between my dad and his business partner we could count 10 trailers that won't meet the current requirements due to them being older trailers before brakes were put on (and they were exempt term trailers.)

I'm all for safer trailers but this is going to get bad.

Used to do a little trailer repair on the smaller ones and if you have the backing plates on axles (4 or 5 bolt flanges) you are good to go if you buy the parts for brakes. 200 bucks, Could be a lot more now. If you ain't got the flanges ,,,new axles! PITA!

Yea...

Now I get to look into putting breaks on my flatbed. I believe it already has all the other requirements, but will probably have to work on some of the marker lights. When does this go into effect?

March 1st 2015 is what tag office told me. Any tag issued will have inspection first.

Technically, you're supposed to have an inspection sticker now. Starting in March, I think you'll have to submit the inspection report to get your trailer registration, so whenever that expires.

So I have a 16-foot tandem trailer with 3,500 lb axles, do I need brakes on both axels, or just one?

There are cattle trailers here that have never had lights and brakes that were used.

You do the math, 2 3500 lb axles= 7k lbs.

If you get pulled over with a trailer with 10k worth of axles that is registered with a gvwr of 3k lbs just so you don't have to have brakes, my guess is your about to get another ticket. When I have registered all of my trailers I was told didn't matter what you were going to put on it, the GVWR was the combination of all axle ratings.
