Those rigs get picked over pretty hard but you can find some fish there from time to time. Just pick your weather days carefully! Even in sight of shore it can turn bad in a hurry and put you in a serious situation. Do you have a GPS? I have a few numbers of reefs fairly close. There was a ship sunk recently by TP&W with a bunch of other concrete structure close. It should be holding some snapper by now. Its located about half way between Port A & Packery just inside the state water line.

I will get the numbers rounded up and to you by the weekend. We don't fish much in state waters except when the ling are in and that is mostly live bait fishing for them around structure. We are typically fishing from 25-90 miles out. All kinds of fishing... trolling, live baiting, jigging, chumming for mako, dropping for grouper, etc, etc. Just got a set up to do some deep dropping for swords, tiles and grouper for this year to. Just ready for some calm, fishable days now.

If you look south from there you will prob see the bout over the sunken ship. This area should be loaded with snapper and lots of other fish right now. Prob lots of ling by April and even sailfish and kings on the troll later into the summer.

During the summer the ship anchorage can give lots of fast action to for the family to. When the kingfish come in you can keep young uns smiling all day with some trolling lures like Russel Lures and Rappalas or a couple of bags of ribbon fish on 2-3 hook rigs (depends on the size of ribbons you get but typically they end up small). As an extra bonus later in the summer I have heard of more than one sailfish caught while trolling there.
Also keep an eye out while drifting down the tanker for ling. They love to hang in the shade esp off the stern around the prop. Keep a rig set up for live piggy perch and keep some in the live well ready. If you see a ling you can get it fired up with any cut chunks as chum then drop in the live piggy free lined and hang on. Keep an eye on the weed patches around the tankers to...the ling cruise them for the sargasso crabs in the patches. If someone thinks they saw a shark cruising on or near the top it is likely a ling...go take a look and have a setup ready. If you don't have live baits for one they absolutely love squid....no weight just hook and flouro leader. I've also had luck with the bigger size Voodoo shrimp in pink or natural brown on them.

If you are putting in at Port A you can run north and find keeper red snappers within 5 miles of the beach. Like it was said above .... pick your days and be careful. The run north would be anywhere from 10 miles to 30 miles but it's pretty good fishing.

Jake, Have you tried any off shore yet? I am headed down next week, and offshore is a possibility. I will be in a 24' center console. Coming down from dew, and would like to catch some fish as well.

For a mixed bag and consistent action just rig hop the near shore rigs just south of the jetties. Dont overlook the small ones. Fish with live shrimp (if available) dead shrimp, cut whiting and cut finger mullet. Just ease up drop to the bottom and start catching. Expect; black drum, hard heads (hard to avoid them), sand trout, monster whiting, skipjacks, redfish, small snapper, sheepsheads, and small sharks. I do this type of trip with beginners and when I dont feel like going very far. It can be a blast and I have caught lots of nice fish for a fish fry doing this.
