Got up Sat morning and saw the wind starting to blow and decided to just fish from the bank. Bought some minnows and decided to try Willis Creek. We got there about sunrise and fished to about 10:00 am. We caught 20 whites before 8:00 am. Then it went slow. Out of the 20 only 7 were keepers, but fun to catch anyway. We were fishing under cork at 3ft. Looks like it could be a good run this year with plenty of water.

thanks for the report. I may have to get out there and give it a try. I imagine the fishing will be better the warmer it gets.

I just moved to Lake Dallas. Is this a good Crappie spot as well? Looking for a creek or bank fishing for Crappie. Thanks in advance.

I don't know the about the crappie fishing in the Willis Creek area. I don't crappie fish much, and I've mainly white bass fished there. I would imagine it is good. Willis creek is smaller than the the San Gabriel river which also feeds lake granger. Most folks fish the San Gabriel at "the Steps" or by the primitive boat launch. Either is easily accessible by foot. You can get a kayak in at the primitive boat ramp pretty easy too. Just know that there are alot more people on the San Gabriel.

Right now, the white bass are beginning to spawn. I think the crappie have already begun their spawn as well. the Crappie may be up in both Willis Creek and the San Gabriel. it's worth going and trying it out. just be prepared to hike a little if you're bank fishing in either spot. It is absolutely gorgeous in either place.

Good luck if you go. Let us know how you do.

Where in Willis do you bank fish??

The only spot I am aware of is just past the COE booth to the left..

Is there another spot I'm missing??

By COE? Do you mean inside the Willis creek park by the booth?

If so, then yes; there is another spot that I fish at.

As you come in off of Highway 95 going north, you turn right (east) on to County Rd. 346 going to Willis Creek park.
Follow 346 all the way until it tees into county rd. 348.
Instead of turning right to go into Willis Creek park you will turn left, or north.
You will go 1/2 mile or 1 mile until you cross a small stream over a bridge. That is Willis creek.
Park and Go downstream from there towards the lake.

I hope that helped. Google maps can help you. I have caught alot of fish back there.

Good luck. Let us know how you did.

AAAAHHHHH.. I know the spot... I saw the area but I have never seen anyone parked there so I figured it wasn't worth the effort to stop...

I will add that to my list of spots, once I find a snake proof body suit.. lol
Not sure my snake proof knee high boots will be enough in there..

Thanks for the info !!!!!

It's absolutely beautiful out there. the wildlife is amazing. Not many people get that way. Back when I was younger, I used to visit Willis Creek about this time of year during the white bass spawn. During that time, most of the people are all over at "the Steps" shoulder to shoulder. But, I didn't get out much this past year due to health problems. Watching the video was nice. thanks for sharing.

Thats a nice bike and yak set up you have there. I bet you can just decide to get up and go anywhere to fish when you get the urge. Nice. I have that same Pelican yak. I don't use it much anymore. My wife wants to sell my yak in a garage sale. I'm hanging on to it as long as I can. I use it when the Pedernales river has water in it up at Reimers Ranch. Or, I use it in San Saba's Colorado Bend State park area. I love that country out there. Not much water in either place these days.

tight lines all!

It's really hard to say. Since the last 3 years it has been too low or dry for whites to spawn up there they might not have made it back there yet. I really cannot even guess.
