Well I have been as close to Kansas as one can get and stay in texas. The surroundings stark but upon inspection it's an amazing place. We were after quail and lucked out big time first half day but slowed down substantially after that. But took some pics along the way. I took the three wt but eased up on a gin clear pond only to see fish dead all over the bottom. That was an end to that looked to be agriculture run off in my opinion. Tumble weeds were all over it was funny there was a ditch that was 15 feet deep 8 wide and 20 long that was the end of the line lol. They were almost to the top. The stars lit up the sky and the sun set and rise spectacular. Even if the birds didn't cooperate The scenery was a great. We saw Prairie dogs, owls, four or five different types of hawks, snow geese, Canadian geese, mule deer, Whitetail deer. Always amazing to enjoy the great outdoors that god gave us.

my girl friend who was never eating wild game now loves deer dove and fish. Then there was a line bunnies. Now she recant and says I didn't say I wouldn't try it lol. With a river close at hand and sandy soil I'm sure the wells are shallow. Wind mills are all over sound reminds me of my child hood. The bridge is an actual wagon bridge yes wagon. It is a monument no and has a historical marker. Sorry if that one is blurry took it doing 55 in the truck. Anyway nice to enjoy the outdoors regardless of how you consider a successful trip.

Oh had two other shotguns in the truck but the old Ithaca 16ga got the call. One of the best guns I've ever shot and going on its third generation in the family.

When did Texas & Kansas start sharing a border?
I think you mean Oklahoma, PS: Texas is ALWAYS capitalized.

Nice pics Roberr! I really like the last one - the way the clouds lead your eye to the trees. Sounds like y'all had a good trip.

Bass bug lol. I'm just omitting oklahoma all together have you ever been in the walmart in Idabel oklahoma lmao. Pretty unique bunch in there. Skipping Ok's little 38 mile thin panhandle I was about 50 miles away from Kansas right in the great REPUBLIC of TEXAS. Born raised and some time die. Phones auto correct just has a sense of humor(built by Yankees). Who needs Okies anyway. It was a great trip and the scenery and wildlife was beyond spectacular.

Yea that last one wasn't anything but a shrub but it was like a funnel leading down to it. I was walking across camp and it was really eye catching.

I like your style and enjoy your posts. After the Texans victory over Santa Anna didn't Texas stretch all the way to Colorado for a short time(until 1845)??-p-

I love the starkness of those photos. It reminds me of "No Country for Old Men". Stark beauty. Say, isn't that the area they were supposedly cattle driving through in "Lonesome Dove" when they were having all that trouble with Blue Duck and that? Isn't that part of the Chisholm Trail?

I saw you killed a quail. Are they common there? Where I live in SW Arkansas quail were once very common. Now they're quite scarce. I think it's because in recent years the've farmed cattle extensively. None of the fields are left natural, but get mowed all the time for hay.

I was very lucky, I was told, to see a quail up close. I have a little tiny patch of trees and we're right next to a pasture that doesn't get mowed too often. I'm out there kind of at the edge fooling around with something and hear a peeping in the trees. At the same time I'd been hearing them calling in the field. I stand very still and look. Along comes a quail through the trees. He kind of runs to a bush and stands there. "You can't see me. You can't see me." Then he runs to the next one and stands. I guess I don't spook him 'cause I make no sudden movements. I get to watch him from about 20 feet for about a minute till he finally makes it to the edge and boogies off into the field. A few minutes later I'm still fiddling around with whatever it is and stand up suddenly. The whole covey busts out of the field and flies off.

If I were Texas I'd look at reincorporating Colorado and NM for that very reason. wink

The place where the ponds I manage are used to be some of the best quail country in the us. Without a dog you push up 25-30 coveys in a half day. Until 3 weeks ago I hadn't seen one in 15 years. I sure hope they keep coming back. Some parts of west Texas, the panhandle, and gulf coast are really starting to see the birds rebound. The place I was at has been extensively managed for wildlife with native vegetation restored every where you looked was simply beautiful. Yes that is the river where newt got bit by the snakes. That bridge was built for the chuk wagons that were with cattle drives.

Well had a unique Super Bowl dinner. My girlfriend who had said I'll never eat rabbit went back for seconds on the bunny LOL. It was also her first time to try quail there was nothing left of the birds either. Did up being an amazing meal and she looks forward to more of it. She has been getting better all the time at trout fishing and is determined to shoot a deer not going to let this one go best catch ever!
