Answer: I just spoke with Robert and he said this topic would be discussed at the pre-tournament meeting.

Below is a link to an Information Paper regarding the KFL and KATS tournaments on Palestine, intended to help clarify the key rule differences for those anglers considering both tournaments, and a frequently asked question and answer section regarding these two tournaments which are being held simultaneously on Palestine in March. The link below will take you to the information paper residing on the fishkats.com homepage.

I also want to mention that the KFL tournament has been open to everyone since January 15th, so at this point, you don't have to be a sponsored angler of any type to enter this event as of Jan 15th...however, I'd advise you to enter soon before the field fills up as, per the KFL rules, the max overflow capacity is 60.

This is gonna be a killer tournament. Robert has some big plans for this thing and is definitely doing some new and cool stuff. I hope to see some of the dallas guys make it down.

This sounds like an interesting tournament...but I'm a little worried about the price and taking Friday off for a kayak tournament.

I can understand your concerns...but the KFL is not just another kayak tournament. For one, considering it is a two day tournament, and big bass is built into the entry fee, it's not much more than the CCKF TOC or KBS tournaments. The main intent of the KFL and this tournament is to provide the sponsored kayak anglers with a venue for promoting their sponsors and themselves in a professionally run tournament. This is not a 3 fish, 10" limit deal for beginners...this is the real deal with the best kayak Bass fishermen fishing against each other and promoting the sport, their sponsors and themselves.

Here are some of the KFL Advantages:
Pro-Level Multi-day Tournaments
Elite 50 Kayak Angler Fields
Highest Levels of Sportsmanship
CPR-Live Weigh-ins
Innovative Technology Integrations
Daily Media Coverage
Unsurpassed Pro-Angler Exposure
High School Angler Outreach Program

I think it's great that this type of event is starting to take off. Palestine is an awesome fishery in the spring and there should be some nice limits caught for this one. Personally, I'm not gonna pony up 250 for an entry fee if I don't feel like I can really prepare for something like this. I could take Friday off, but IMO with that kind of stakes you need to be out there fishing at least a couple days during the 2-3 days leading up. I just can't swing that so I'm out. I'll be at the KATS tourney on Saturday though.

My guess is that you'll get 50 guys no problem but I'll be interested to see the ratio of "pro-staff" nationally sponsored guys to non sponsored guys. Sure there's a lot of Jason O'Brien and Steve Garcias out there on national teams who are hardcore badazz tourney guys, but there are even more guys, many very prominent, on those same teams who seem to avoid fishing tourneys at all cost. Guess what I'm trying to say is: privileging pro staffers and trying to appeal to them is not equal to appealing to the most hardcore tourney guys IMHO ;-)

Any case, I look forward to the results and seeing all those dudes on Saturday.

My take on these kind of tournaments is this: They are a great opportunity to fish against the guys that feel like they are the best around. And if an angler is fortunate enough to win one, then it's a very nice payout. Maybe everyone can't stomach such a steep entry fee or dedicate the time they think they need to compete. That's fine, this format isn't for them, but there's plenty other opportunities that are. I'm living proof that it's anybody's ball game once the fishing starts. In reality we are competing against the fish..... There is a movement to take competitive kayak bass fishing to a more prominent level. Like it or not, that's the next step. KFL has that goal in mind I think. And I believe there are enough, or will be enough, willing participants to make it happen. I'm very much looking forward to this tournament. There will be a bunch of fish caught and somebody will win a nice chunk of change.

Good points Gut and I agree that most guys will want to be pre-fishing during the official practice dates leading up to the tournament...I know I'll be there all that week. But I want to remind everyone that the tournament has now been open to all anglers since 15 January and every angler will get media exposure...not just the sponsored anglers...so the opportunity exists to show the kayak manufacturing companies and other fishing related companies that, not only can you catch fish, but, you can also present yourself well on stage and open the door to sponsorship for yourself. In addition, there will be at least two local High Schools that have opened their doors to provide their students with the chance to see and talk to several anglers about the sport of kayak Bass fishing in general and the Palestine event in particular. The ability to pass on the great sport of kayak Bass fishing to these High School students is worth the price of admission in my mind and why I'm supporting this event the best I can.

Totally agree Michael... I'm choosing not to fish it not because I think it's a bad format or even too expensive. If I had the ability to put in the time to prepare by prefishing during that week, (like I know 95% of the participants will be doing) I'd be all over this. These types of things just don't work well with my job. Someday someone will do one of these in June, July or August and I'll be all over it.

One thing's for sure: the best kayak bass anglers in the country live in this state and A LOT of them will be at this event. The level of competition at this event will far eclipse what is being seen at any other venue anywhere in the country, much like what we saw with TOC last year. The angler who wins this will beat a field that has tons more tourney experience and pedigree than a lot of these other 'national' tourneys you see popping up. Just sayin...

Time is tough to come by Tom. It sucks being a grown up sometimes. But you'll fit one in. 5 yrs ago I'd have a terrible time finding any time for this type of event. And in a couple months most of my fishing comes to a halt. That's why I'm so excited about this event. I may not get a bite, but I will be fishing 100% in my comfort zone on one of my favorite places.

I want to remind everyone to read the rules (link on the first page of this thread) as there is a strict off limits, powerboat, and guide period written into the rules.
