This day being my only day off, I'm going to fight the wind and go crappie catching! The corp has shut the discharge gates down to a point that there shouldn't be a current. Wish me luck and no, i'm not going to be out in open water 20mph winds predicted with 30mph gusts.

Good luck. Duck season over today so I will be getting the rods out now. Might hit LOP before I hit patman though.

Let us know how you did Jimmy. How is the water in the river? I noticed they had shut the gates when I drove across the river on 59 below the dam yesterday coming back from Pines.

Well. things didn't work out as planned. There was still to much current in the river so I stayed around mauldon area and only managed 3 crappies, no keepers!

Jimmy is 1870 cfs to much current to fish the river? I cant remember what number I like it to be under. Seems like anything under a 1000 is ok. Just trying to figure out if I want to fish the river, herron, or go to the LOP tomorrow.

Yep! If you check this site and only 2 gates are open @1ft, you are good to go for crappie if @ 2ft catfishing would be good in the eddy's http://www.swf-wc.usace.army.mil/cgi-bin/rcshtml.pl?page=Reports

Does anyone ever fish the open water down at the dam during the winter? Surely the Crappie in that part of the lake will move out to the channel and hang out on the edges. I've thought about giving it a try, but never have.
