I talked to santa cruz kayaks owner, jim martin recently. He said he is finishing the mold for a carbon fiber/kevlar version of the raptor. He said he thinks he can get the weight of the boat down around 20lbs. Oh man...i want one bad.

Wow! That sounds super expensive!
It'll be very cool for sure, but there couldn't possibly be that big of a market for a carbon/kevlar fishing kayak.

20 lbs? that would be a game changer if it was even moderately affordable. if they can keep in under/around 2k, I bet there will be a huge market for it.

#20 would be amazing. Native at one time offered a light-weight version of the Ultimate 12 - the Tegris. #36 and not sure what the price was - about $2k. Not sure why they stopped offering it - a Tegris with a propel would be a great boat IMO.

I remember wilderness made a carbon fiber commander too when those first came out. it was $5k and still weighed 50lbs. it was a limited deal though and I don't think they were concerned about the marketability of it.
20lbs is crazy light. it will be a cool boat for sure.

They prob said the same about carbon fiber paddles too. True, but the cost of an all carbon fiber kayak is going to price it way out of the budget of most kayak anglers. If a carbon fiber paddle cost $300-$400+ than I can't possibly see an all carbon fiber kayak costing anything less than $4,000; especially since the raptor would have to be made in two pieces (more man hours). Most kayakers can justify the cost for a carbon fiber paddle when they do the math on how often they're having to lift the paddle for a stroke throughout a day. Seems it would be hard for someone to justify spending that much money on a lightweight fishing kayak just to make it easier to load/unload. #20 would be amazing. Native at one time offered a light-weight version of the Ultimate 12 - the Tegris. #36 and not sure what the price was - about $2k. Not sure why they stopped offering it - a Tegris with a propel would be a great boat IMO. My guess, nobody wanted to pay $2,000 for a canoe. Also, the Tegris was a kevlar/fiberglass hybrid (cheaper material), could be molded as one piece and still cost $2,000.

I know they are working on a prototype for testing. I wonder if the weight would make it difficult to control on the water (too subject to wind and waves). But I guess you really don't know until you put one on the water. As far as purchasability...people would buy it. We purchase things all the time that the cost exceeds the function.

Yeah, I would have some cause for concern about being too light and affecting its paddle-ability. I think 20lbs is a very lofty goal after looking at what carbon/kevlar sea kayaks weigh. After reading re-reading Christians first post and seeing it's a carbon/kevlar blend the cost could be as low as $3,000, depending on how much carbon is used. There's also a weird stigma with kayak anglers that carbon fiber, when used in paddles, is brittle and can't stand up to the normal wear and tear that kayak anglers would subject it to on normal trips. I know this to be a fallacy, but it is something they'll have to overcome.

What would happen if they lower the weight and add a propel system with a nice rudder?????????? Winner Winner Chicken Dinner in my humble opinion.

A good/stable yak that light would be awesome. It would also stay awesome looking because it would never leave my garage because there's no way that I'm going to risk scratching up a kevlar/carbon fiber yak. This is why my hunting guns have synthetic stocks. Wood looks better but I'd be miserable if I scratched it all up and I know that a yak is going to get scratched up.
