I've fished the wakebaits I make and have come to a crossroad regarding color patterns....Is It the action of the WakeBait that catches the fish or the pattern/action combo? Due to the nature of the WakeBait and its "topwater" presentation, will having that "bluegill" pattern make the difference?

I think action and shades of color are most important. Does a bass care if a wake bait cruising across the surface has a shad pattern versus a bluegill? I dont think so

I'm going to agree with jaret, I think alot of the baits we are painting are way to detailed. On cranks, wake baits, traps I think having the right color is key but they don't need all the detail. Now a jerkbait that is sitting still for long periods and the fish is getting a good look at it, that's a different story. I am guilty of trying to pack as much detail as possible into the cranks I am painting and keep telling myself to quit doing so. This is just my opinion and it's probably wrong hehe

My best wake bait that is over 40 years old and still catching is a Chrome/Black back. It is worn down to bone color in most places now and doesn't produce like it once did. I only throw it on cloudy overcast days in the early months of the year.

I have tried to replace it but the baits are either two small, to fat and etc. to duplicate. I just need to look harder which I have not done.

I have the best luck in the bone color just as I do with my spooks.

There are plenty of smaller lakes (under 1500 acres) where bluegill are by far the primary forage instead of shad. I fish those kind of lakes a lot, and am always looking for bluegill patterned baits (even if it might not make that much of a difference). However, if a company labels their product "Bluegill" or "Sunfish" I'm buying it. Because I'm partially color blind, I'd be more comfortable purchasing something labeled "bluegill" instead of something labeled "blue/green back orange". Just walking the isles at Cabela's, Academy, or Bass Pro, I can tell you that "bluegill" labeled baits are underrepresented in the metroplex.

It is the action; but fisherman also want their confidence colors and they will keep throwing it. The longer you throw a bait the better chance of hooking up. Then it will be in their box forever. So you have to produce all the colors if you are going to put a bait up for sale. You don't want just the 10 fisherman wanting shad colors. You want the 20 also that want Bluegill and so goes the color chart.

Might try this on El Salto next month. Reports say top water bite is crazy good! I know they work well this time of year on the warm power plant lakes.

Tilapia painted wakebait fish...but I'm sure she wouldn't have cared if it were a bluegill paintjob grin
