I had a bunch of slides from a guy named Denver that ran trips to Cuba. Increadable stringers on them. One had every fish at least 8# or better. They were on a rope stringer . It took two people to lift it for the picture .

The story he told was it all ended on a lake where Castro had a retreat. They got too close. Ended up face down with a gun to their head. Invited never to come back. If I remember correctly the slides were from the early 70's.

Unless he's done it recently, your memory is failing. Jimmy's biggest bass ever is a 13-1 out of Lake Hanabanilla, Cuba. He caught her on a blue and chrome Zara Spook. I can remember that show like it was yesterday. I have wanted to go down there and bass fish ever since!

There was a Roland Martin show when Baccarac was the hottest lake in Mexico. One of his traveling/fishing companions came flying up in his boat. Had a 19 pounder in a cooler he claimed to have caught on Roland's "helicopter lure." Pretty sure the guy got her from a gill netter.

Never heard about two 20lb fish being caught but know there were fish over 16 caught on our trips. I'm sure scouts will be fishing what ever lakes are now hot and reporting soon. If the travel restrictions are freed up my friend that made the trips in 79' is ready to go back.

Unless they have upgraded which I doubt the accommodations are poor. The Hotel Zaza pamphlet showed pools, tv ad hot water. The pool had about two feet of moss and slime on the bottom. One tv in the lobby and it had two choices, the best of Fidel or Cuban baseball. Oh yes the hot water was in a small mental bucket outside the door each morning. The cabaas in the water at the second lake we fished were pretty neat and the guide picked you up in the boat each morning. They had a buffet that must have been 40 feet long with everything from bass cooked by soaking overnight in lime juice to crocodile meat and even horse meat which we didn't try.

They also had mosquitos that could hump a duck and we got home with an illness that sent Dave to the hospital after his date found him in the fetal position on the kitchen floor. I lived on two cans of seven up for days in bed waiting on them to find out what Dave had and they never did. I was so sick I called Las Colinas security on a Thur. night asking them to come to my door on Monday to see if I was still kicking. So how good was he fishing, we went back 6 months later. I watched my friend catch 3 over 7 on consecutive casts the first stop we made on day one. It was as good as it gets. Only thing I can compare it to is Falcon at it's best and Cuba was better.

So hope they have some good lakes still and we open up the travel. One more thing, the security folks where we landed have no sense of humor. Before you land they ask you to make a list of the valuables you're bringing into the country, I listed an alarm clock as a radio and the solders at the gate thought I was going to be transmitting secrets back to the states and began to take it apart. I finally got it across that it was just an alarm clock and all was well but Dave had to change undies. One other high lite was as we boarded the plain to leave the next group was heading to Cuban customs. Two less than bright fellows brought two young ladies with them (dressed to kill and not to fish) and when those broads got a look at the Hotel Zaza I sure the rest of the trip was a dumpster fire. Can't wait to get back down there........

Last night I viewed Anthony Bordain's "No Reservations" TV show about his trip to Cuba and it was very interesting. Mainly the food. Nothing about bass fishing, but an interesting look into Cuba as it is today. As for me, I will never feel safe going there, due to my past government employment.
I won't even go to Sugar Lake, Mexico, now, although I did in the past. No fish is worth the chance you take, plus who would want to put up with the hostile environment you experienced in Cuba. I'll just stick with Falcon Lake. Interesting report, though!

The Cubans in uniform were doing their job I guess, the Cuban people were warm and friendly. Guides were also. Once past the airport I never felt threated in fact it was all in all a pretty enjoyable experience.

Correct me if I am wrong, I think the "Florida bass strain was the result of Cuban bass
being introduced to Florida waters.

the only time I fished there was 1n 1959,(USN) Castro was perceived as a good guy fighting Batista.

I would check out a rod and reel from the Navy boatdock, and hand catch shrimp at night.
when I would catch one and put it on my hook , it would result in a great Snook fight.
Obviously it was "brackish water around the boat dock .

the reason I fished at night was because it was too hot to sleep in the Navy barracks.
the barracks for temporary sailors did not have any glass in the windows( Leeward point).
the Hatuey(sp) beer was cold (if you used a fire bottle in a trashcan on it )

Hold the phone, don't book that trip just yet. I remember the book "Sowbelly" by Monte Burke. Published in 2006 I believe.
He fished a famous lake in Cuba and if memory serves me correctly he zeroed. No fish management over there...I'm gonna have to read it again now.

I used to dream of fishing in Cuba also, I have talked to several guys that fished it and they all did very well. But that was then, late 70's I believe, and this is now.

I had a taxidermy business back in the 70's and did several bass mounts from customers that caught bass in Cuba. It was one of the premiere places to go back then along with Lake Guerrero in Mexico.

That is correct. I'm not sure about any other stories on this thread of twenty plus pounders. I remember that chrome spook show as well and it was awesome! Seems I remember Roland taping and that guy pulled up with the 19- he pulled it out of his cooler already dead and held it up for the camera- a monster. I think Roland held it out for the camera. That was Baccarac. Looks like a picture of that 13.1 is on that website for Cuban bass fishing. I'm not so sure about any twenty lb fish though- at least not from any verified evidence that I have seen.
However, the lack of pressure and the environment make me wonder about the maximum size down there- very interesting.

Great climate for big bass. Cuba has recently gone through some very tough times. A lot of bass have been eaten for survival. That being said, there's no boat dealership in Cuba, and very few homemade canoes are likely to have fished the deepest parts effectively.

Things have probably changed a lot but in the late 70s and early 80s the locals were using live bait and hand lines. Our guides were overjoyed to get our used worms. Only boats I saw were small flat bottom ones. Getting a camera was a once in a lifetime deal. They would fight for a new pair of jeans. But did see some hand line fisherman with a couple over 10 in the bottom of the boat.

Largemouth bass are native to Florida, and bass were introduced to Cuba from the United States for various reasons. The one mentioned on the Jimmy Houston Show was, after the Spanish-American war, they were introduced to control malaria carrying mosquitoes. Another reason was for recreation by the Sugar Cane plantation owners and employees. The United States has introduced largemouths into 61 countries around the world, with not so favorable results everywhere. A lot of places, like Japan, consider them to be the most invasive species they have.

If you go via Grand Cayman it's never a problem, they don't stamp your passport and they do have boats that will get to the deep parts of the lakes. Heck there are decent dive shops with decent dive boats. It will be at least 30 yrs before there is any type of infrastructure to support tourism. Havana is safer than most US cities.
