Below is a link to Jim Martin's first sea trial of his upcoming foot propulsion system for the Santa Cruz Kayaks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AR0nk8OU2kQ&feature=youtu.beIt looks as if there will need to be a few more "test runs" before production but Mariner Sails will have one in stock as soon as they are available. BTW...Jim says that the new drive unit will be able to retrofit to current Santa Cruz's.

Interesting looking system, it sounds a little noisy.

I like the concept, and think that when/if it comes to market it will be a very nice craft. But I can't imagine it being easy to transport, especially if you're like me and have to load and unload it by yourself. But that just me.

Rudder control is on the wrong side for a right handed fisherman. Paddle wheel and rudders do not appear to be retractable like other pedal systems. This kayak is very tall. Sits really high on the water and would subject to wind problems.

RealBigReel I don't go too fast but I go pretty far.

The yak in the vid is the original raptor. Its the first one ever made from wood etc. The yaks are not tall at all. I think we are all in for a suprize when the drive comes out.

Thanks for posting this video. It's cool seeing the initial trial run. There is some genius in the design. I don't recall seeing a paddle wheel consisting of multiple individual paddles before.

I'd like to see a rear drive peddle boat where the prop acts as your steering also. Similar to what you'd see with an outboards motor. The thing would turn on a time. Thanks for sharing that video. I hadn't seen that yet.

Well that looks very interesting. Does anyone have any kind of date when that might be in production? Boss at home finally said yes buy the kayak you want. (February) Should I wait a bit longer?????????

What would be the advantage of a paddle wheel system? Seems you lose all the room for gear, and just add weight that isn't needed. A gear driven cable system(flexible like a speedometer cable) similar to the propel drive mounted to the rear would allow for compact propulsion and steering all in one, and leave plenty of room for gear also similar to a rudder system on most kayaks. I understand it's an attempt at a new design, but it's a bit of overkill in my opinion.
