I cut my tuna teeth doing 48 hour trips with DSH on the Pelican. I went a lot with John Brennan, Keith Banks and Clint Clark. I have no experience with the captains that are now doing these trips for them.

But always great results in the past.

Thanks. This is my first trip tuna fishing. Would you recommend me taking my own gear or using there's? Tips on first tuna rod and reel combo? Thanks

Something I have always felt strongly about is .... the first trip should be more about learning and "getting the feel" rather than the all out approach. (I always recommend that the first timer stick to chunking rather than get into artificials like poppers and jigs. But that's just me. Having said that the equipment they furnish is for chunking and not of high quality.

A good entry level chunking reel would be a Shimano TLD 30II. It's 2 speed and a lever drag. You'll need to learn the advantages of this before you hit the water. Pair this reel with a good 60 - 80# rod and fill it with Momoi Diamond 60# mono. You can learn about braids, topshots,, etc. before your next trip.

Usually on the Pelican the crew will be throwing topwaters, etc. and handing off to folks when they hook up so stay close to them.

There is a lot to learn so if you have more questions you can PM me if you want.

Good luck.

Thanks - I think I'll use their tackle this first trip.

I did catch the big one (well Reed hooked it and I fought it). First fish of the trip. Clint, Reed, Steven, and Lloyd worked our boat. Nice guys - those boys know how to fish. I caught two others on chunk the first night so I came home happy and worn out.

I've fished many times with Clint and Lloyd and they are top notch. Lloyd lives in Minnesota now and I didn't know he was back in town.

Lloyd has been fishing there as long as I can remember that dude can straight up catch fish!!! I have fished with him outside of deepseaduke headquarters since a buddy of mine was a deck hand with them and he is unreal!

Look to her for inspiration and you will learn the secrets to living a good life. The most Important lesson it would seem is to make sure you spend as much time fishing as anything else.

Got the Pelican reserved for this upcoming weekend. (17-18th). 24-hr trip. Looking forward to it. Weather looks as if it's going to allow us out.

How much is a 48 hr trip?
I wonder if you can book the whole boat for a discounted rate?

We had an awesome trip on the Pelican this last weekend.

Total weight was 2098 lbs worth of amberjacks and blackfin tuna.

Had several rookies along this year but wholly [censored] did Captains and their crew ever put us on the fish!
We are already looking forward to next years trip with Deep Sea HQ!
