I'm 6 foot and a thanksgiving dinner away from 300lbs. IM asking the guys that really know kayaks what would be a decent starter Yak for a heavier guy. I'll be using it in the creek almost exclusively during the winter and spring.Id love to find one at a cheaper price also. Not really sure what a good price would be either. Hopefully you guys can steer me in the right direction.

I would be very careful buying a "cheap" kayak. Most cheaper kayaks lack the stability needed for the larger crowd. Try to test paddle any kayak before you buy it. And paddle as many as you can to get a "feel" for the different kayaks out there. Good luck on your search! Remember... Demo, demo, demo!

Chris Payne just posted his commander 140 for sale...I have personally seen and paddled this boat and it is a bargain at 900, plus it has a capacity of over 400 pounds

I think the lowest priced kayak that I have seen with a large weight capacity is the prowler 13. And it's 599 at academy right now I believe. Usually it's 699!

One more thing to keep in mind is that some kayaks perform better when you stay under about 2/3 of the stated weight capacity...
Just one more reason to test paddle them if you can...

Ken,
BTW...Mariner Sails will be closed for Thanksgiving but will re-open on Friday with our normal (9-6) weekday hours and (10-4) on Saturday.
Aris is also conducting a MBF Black Friday sale on both Friday and Saturday.
Be sure and drop by the store and check out the great bargains! We have several great closeout kayaks that would be a great fit for you.

I have a old town vapor. I'm 6-2 240 and use weekly in the river and some in the lake. I have never felt like it would tip and it's easy to carry

Malibu X Factor. Ocean Kayak Big Game. Cobra Fish N Dive. All have rating around 500 pounds or more. I started with the Big Game and tipped the scales a hair under 300. Never been disappointed. The OK Prowler will leave you with a wet but I know.

I just put my Wilderness Systems Ride 135 up for sale. 550lb capacity, 13.5" long. She's a great gear hauler and very stable.
