I have been using Casting reels for many years and just tried the spinning reel for a change. I just don't see any advantage. They are suppose to cast light baits but I swear its just as easy with a caster. Maybe its just me.....

Put a 1/4 oz jig head on both of them and get back to us.
If its not clear then try casting said 1/4 oz into the wind.

I throw 1/8 oz chatterbaits in the wind on a baitcaster all the time/ It all depends on how much experience you have using them. I haven't used a spinning reel in years just don't like them at all.

I have a 6ft lite rod with a H2o reel that will make them small bates sing. I think I would like a spinning reel, but they just don,t work for me and I think the world record for distance is held by a casting reel.

I dont like spinning reels much, but I'm forced to use them for lighter baits, cause I never have been able to cast light stuff with my baitcasters, therefore I keep some of both...Baitcasters for catfish, spinning rigs for everything else.

I use open face spinning reels and i fish for anything that will bite. I dont care about casting to the other side of the lake. If i try to cast to a spot and i cant get it, i move closer.

Since I work in a tackle shop, I get asked this question all the time. I have to say that casting distance with a decent reel and the applicable rod to the type bait you are throwing, the baitcaster throws further. For those that have become comfortable only using open face spinnings reels, are missing out on the basics of bass fishing. Yes, with experience you can get pretty accurate in consecutively casting a spinner, but once you get comfortable with a baitcaster, you will improve your accuracy by as much as 80%!!
Your accuracy with a spinner is in how you load up and point the rod tip, whereas accuracy with a baitcaster can be controlled after you load the rod all the way to the target by using your thumb to slow the travel of the cast to the target. This that practice, but is the greater determining factor between the two types.
Open face spinning reels come into their own when casting into the wind with lighter lures. It is good to have both types in your arsenal.

I dont own a spinning reel and can still throw down to a 1/16OZ if needed... Casting when used with the right Rod and bearing upgrade can cast a mile...

In theory the bait caster will cast farther because the reel is pushing the line of the spool. The weight being cast pulls the line off the spool of spinning and spin cast reals causing a drag.
Personally I like spinning better because it is darn near impossible to get a birds nest. I invariably got back lashes with bait casters.
I don't fish as much as I would like so I sold the bait casters and now use only spinning reels.

Yeh, but uncle Steve is using a drone to carry the bait out and drop it. So it doesn't count.

For tossing very light lures, less than 1/16th of an ounce I use an 8' Daiwa Presso spinning rod and Shimano Symetre reel loaded with 4 lb line. Works great when trout move far out in the pond and the majority cannot cast to them.
I would like to see what Nitroman77 is doing to a baitcaster to get that kind of distance. What kind of line, what kind of bearing upgrade etc.
My buddy is excellent with a bait caster but converted to spinning gear when trout fishing as he could not get much distance with very light lures, ie. super dupers.

Baitcasters have for the longest been for casting 1/4oz baits and above with more accuracy and distance since the spool is spinning freely on ball bearings and a spinning reel was mostly used for lighter baits as most people have already said but lately some of the baitcasters have become more finesse oriented like the Abu Garcia MGX (which I have), Shimano Core and the Diawa Steez among a few with great success. I had a lot of trouble casting light lures especially in wind until I got the MGX and now half the time I leave my spinning combo at home. But also like the rest of y'all said its a matter of preference and ability for most of us but to answer your question in short form without a bunch of information a baitcaster will cast further and more accurately with a skilled angler.

What's the minimum size mono or braided line that you can use on a baitcaster? I'm a newbie
