i am a novice crappie fisherman. I found a school of Crappie on a very small hump on my home waters in 15 FOW. They are not in brush, just on top of the hump. I positioned on top of them and dropped a small jig on em and got hit twice right away before landing 1 in the first 5 min. After that, not another bite for 2 hrs. I stayed on top of em watching my graph. They would not stay long under my boat. They would keep moving 20 or so yards away. The water is stained but they wised up quick! Minnows are illegal on this lake. What would y'all do different to coax them into biting? Thank you!

I would have never parked on top of them.Once I marked them on the Hump I would have dropped a marker and cast to them. 2cents

Makes sense. Do you just cast your little jig out, let it sink to the bottom and slowly bounce it back to boat? Or is there another technique? Thank you for the help!

So your not over the fish Long pole light tackle is best for really soft bites and I do mean soft, there will be times your going to raise your pole and there's a fish, so pay attention we have all missed those big ones like that. If the water is not too bumpy (so you can notice a strike) you can slip bobber over them at your preferred depth were the fish are. Lastly you cast out to them let the jig fall and if you count while its falling if you get a hit you know about the depth but do this with different jig weights some fish will hit a fast fall and some want it slow so you may need to lighten it up. 2cents

You will get 100 different opinions about shot, it depends on wind, water current and weather you use them to get snags off. I personally go just jig and light tackle, if there a lot of hangs my bud taught me about the sliding lead to get unhung, I use to just pull my gold hook straight and bend it back. Hope this helps!

sometimes these winter pattern fish don't sit still , it may be nothing more than them slowly following bait and or searching for it
you might try to set up a drift over the area
sometimes it works very well thumb

Thanks for all the suggestions. I read a lot of y'alls reports and hear a lot that you fish your lure off the bottom, like "I caught em 7' down in 12' FOW". I am assuming you are using slip bobbers for this right? Since you don't want to sit on top of the fish? Sorry for all the questions, I really want to get better at crappie fishing. I have bass fished all my life.

Not really, A lot of the fish I catch 7' down in 12 fow came from straight jigging while keeping track of my depth. or using a 1/32 and counting how long it takes to get the bottom, then using the count method after casting past them, slowly swimming it back, slow enough to stay in the zone. And Yes the slip cork, cast past them, then slowly and slightly twitching it to slowly swim thru them.
Sometimes it takes using several different methods to find out what they want, then you can repeat for some often fast action.
Good Luck in your Quest for the Thump thumb

I too, am a converted Bass fisherman, but I find crappie to a much more challenging opponent, making the success that much sweeter banana
