7' medium action casting rod, 12# floro line for twitch and pause presentations works well. When the water is in the mid 60's or higher, I'll use a spinning rod, because it easier to move the bait faster with sharp downward pops.

Jerkbaits are awesome! I use Yozuri Crystalfish. Jerkbaits are great for non aggressive shallow cruisers. Dropping a Jerkbait six inches from the shoreline and using a slow retrieve with a quick pause cadence is deadly!

A buddy of mine and I were on Squaw Creek many years ago throwing jerk baits, a Rapala Husky Jerk. We were using identical baits and the same exact line and he was getting bit more than I was,,2-1. He was using a M/H rod and I was using a M action rod. The following weekend I switched to a M/H rod like he was using and caught the same as he did. In that case a M/H rod was better, although the weather was warm. We were not fishing cold water. We both were using an aggressive double twitch then pause motion. I guess the M/H rod made it twitch more erratic than the M action rod, I don't know. They would hit is on the pause.

Watch out Brad, it's addictive I predict next June you may start to crave those January through February days when it's 40 degrees outside, the water is 45-50 degrees, light breeze and partly cloudy.

Hell I keep wishing it was 105 and water temp was 85 I was having the best time fishing deep this summer than I have had in a long time. If I can catch fish like that in cold weather I might need to retire from work and fish all day year around.
