I'm thinking about kayaking the Elm Fork in Dallas next week. One of my friends that doesn't own a yak wants to rent one from Trinity Kayak and go downstream to one of the takeout spots they use. Is it worth the trouble?

A few of us paddled the Elm Fork of the Trinity River from Dimension Tract in Carrollton to California Crossing in Dallas a few weeks ago. This was an 8 mile paddle and weather aside, it was a very pleasant trip. That said, I really cant comment on if it is a good place to fish, but it is a very nice place to paddle.

I belong to a few local kayak groups who have a few paddles coming up in that part of the Trinity in the next few weeks if you're looking for a local river trip with friendly people who are all pretty willing to give you pointers on how you can become a more effective and safe kayaker, you might find these interesting.

You have to be a member of the meetup group to view the details of this trip so I've included a description.

Dallas Down River Club - Urban Paddle - 11/16/2014

Trip Description:
Meet at McInnish Park on November 16th at 12 noon. We will have a picnic lunch and get on the water by 1 pm for a beautiful Sunday afternoon paddle. Gear Requirements: Basic items; life jacket, canoe or kayak, water, insect repellent, Picnic blanket or folding chair, and sunscreen. Also, consider bringing rain gear - November can have cold rainy weather.

Meals: Lunch will be a picnic please bring your lunch.

Back-up Plans: In case of foul weather or high water we will reschedule this event.

I have done the paddle from McInnish Park up to 121 and back a couple of times. It feels basically the same paddling upstream as it does downstream, very slow moving river. The first time I paddled it, the river was a mess with trash building up against every stump and branch in the water, but the overall view was very nice. The other time I paddled it, the river was much cleaner looking, which only furthered the relaxation of my leisurely day. One of these days I will take my fishing gear along and try a few spots, just have to find the free time and motivation, which seldomly seems to happen here lately.
