I made my first solo trip in the kayak today. Decided to go some place close to home and not too isolated. Headed over to a little pond off of hebron in Lewisville. Used to be a sail boat dealership at one time, the little lake was used for demos. My fish finder read depths in the 30 foot range about 20 feet off the shoreline. It's plenty deep. Caught a few small ones and one that weighed in at 2.4lbs in the first 30 minutes I was there. Then I hooked into a fish that felt really good, as I tried to move my paddle out of the way I lost grip of my rod, goodbye fish, goodbye 120 bucks!! Tried to keep fishing but couldn't get rid of the sick feeling so I left. While I was loading up the kayak an older gentleman approached me and asked how I did. He pulled out some pictures of the fish that he's caught in there. Gigantic blues! He said at the deepest point the lake is 40+ feet deep. Anyway, now I'm really curious about this water. If anyone has any further information about this area and what species are in it I'd love to hear about it. Also, if anyone has any tips for a newbie on managing rods, paddles, catching fish, all without losing any gear that would be great as well. Plus side, I had an excuse to head over to basspro and pick up a new rod and reel, oh and a pack of rod floats too! Thanks guys!

My 2nd PB large mouth came from there back in the mid 90' @ 11 lb. on a berkley power worm Tx rigged (red shad)
On the other side of Hebron (no ramp) the Bass will school up in the afternoon until sunset. Fish those schooling fish deep as that is where the larger fish will be. The 2 lb fish are the schoolers.
There are plenty of bluegill, catfish, black bass and crappie in there.
The water is healthy as are the baitfish. I have seen some hogs swimming the shore. Hydrilla is plentiful.
Oh and get you a rod leash. I did after doing the same thing you did. Heart breaking, sick feeling.....

You can spend big bucks on leashes or just get a small spool of nylon rope and make leashes for everything for like $2. Leash the paddle, leash the rods at the reel seat, never worry again.

Thanks for the report and pics, Rob, and sorry to hear that you lost a rod. Unfortunately, I think most of us 'yak anglers have lost rods at one point or another--that's one reason I don't spend a lot of money on rod and reels. I've tried rod leashes and didn't like them. There are also foam rod floats you can buy but I've never tried them. Some people here like them and some don't. The good news is that rod/equipment management gets better with practice and experience. Thanks agin for sharing...Bert

txbassnewbie-- I'll let you know next time I head that way. Tentatively, I'm thinking I may go next Tuesday morning. addicted---I just back my car up into the ramp and unload everything then park pretty much where the pin is dropped on the screen shot. shut-up-and-fish---I looked at the water across hebron with no ramp. There are no fishing, private property signs everywhere. The guy I spoke with said that he fishes there and gets ran off all the time. He said he's going to keep fishing there until they arrest him...lol.

Yes there are no fishing signs up around the office complex on the south side of Hebron. I park use to park on the street that runs along the train tracks. No harm no foul. No one has ever messed with me there. You can also launch the yak from there. that leg has the most schooling action.
