How do yall make redfish rigs for the surf? What size hook,weight,leader material, and swivel?

Are you talking about a double dropper rig or a fish finder rig?

I like a carolina rig with a steel leader. I can cast it pretty far and it rarely gets tangled up.

For live bait I use a 1oz egg on my braid then below I tie a swivel then I tie 40lb mono bet 24-36" depending on water depth to a circle hook. Not having the weight limited by the "beads in tandem with the rig" gets more bites to me. It allows the bait to swim more freely with any slack I have in the line. A red may hit a traditional rig and feel the tug back from the weight and drop the bait. With my setup I'll get multiple strikes and then bam be the fish is pulling out the slack. Not to mention I'll see the strikes bc the translate straight to my rod and not to the weighted rig first then to my rod.

You dont say if you are targeting bull reds or slot reds, but I will assume bull reds. For surf, you will need a spider weight to hold in the sand. Somewhere between 2-8oz, depending on current, waves, and what your rod can handle. Egg definitely will not hold in the surf, and pyramid will only hold if very flat or light surf. I use a 14/0 circle hook for bull reds, others I know use anywhere from 5/0 to 16/0 circle hooks. I typically use a 4-5oz spider weight on a leader made of 200# mono. I also have some made up with nylon coated wire in case I run into a lot of sharks or jacks (toothy critters) in the surf.

Best is to buy crimpers and make your own leaders. Many stories of pre-made, storebought leaders failing. Search this site and others for different types of rigs for reds. Several ways to go. Good luck.

Definately go with heavier, stiffer line in the surf when using spider weights on a carolina rig otherwise you will spend many hours a few minutes at a time untangling the trace from the lead.
