I have been super busy with work the last several months. Time on the water has been distant memory. The recent cooler temperatures motivated us to drop everything and just get away, for a few days. With all the area lakes being extremely low, we opted to head north for Texoma. I did some research and found some very nice lake front cabins on the big mineral arm of the lake. We packed up and arrived on Sunday afternoon. The family got settled in and we walked down the lake. I waded into the water with to catch some bait. I guess it looked like fun because my daughters followed me in. They were wet, cold and muddy so back to the cabin we went. The area was extremely shallow and didn't have much structure. After a few throws it was apparent, there was no shad in the vicinity. I knew with a major northern moving in later that night, I needed to fill the bait cooler up pretty quick. I drove down to the marina and through off the boat docks. 10 to 16" gizzards on almost every throw. I even managed to get a nice 20" carp..... With the weather turning to hell that night, I decided to hold off fishing until the following morning. Pottsboro got pounded from about 1 till 5am. We realized that morning that it was just to cold and windy to take our daughters on to the bank...... Mama and the kids stayed in and I hit the lake. The fish were biting from the get go. I was having to use strips and fillets, so I could get some distance on my rigs. I was dripping wet after about 3 hours of being on the bank. There was a very light mist coupled with the WNW 25-30 winds. I'm pretty sure the gusts were 40 or better at times. After my clothing situation turned soggy, I decided to go back to the cabin and grill up some fajitas! Later that evening, the winds turned more NW and subsided, just a tad.... I layered up and went back out for a few hours. The lighter winds allowed me to throw some bigger sized baits out, but the bite was definitely slower than before. 10, 15, 17, 31, 34 were the only noteworthy catches. Had a my farthest rod lay over and scream, but the fish spit the bait.... I didn't catch any scale scramblers but still had a great time. It was definitely a nice change of pace and scenery, with the family. I'm already thinking about the next one!
