I LOVE frog fishing... I was on Fork today in Williams, and I had 3 bass hit on my hollow-body frogs half-way into the pads. These are thick!!! I lost all three fish. It may be equipment, it may be technique, or it may be both...

What are your tips for getting the bass on top of the pads before they wrap up around the stalk and come off?

Stout rod, strong heavy line and once you set the hook reel, reel and reel some more!

My .02
1. Braid - 60-80 lb
2. Rod with lots of backbone - lots of specialty rods out there
3. let them eat it
4. 7:1 quality reel to get them out of there quick (some people like low gear ratio reels to winch them out)
5. tighten drag down

of course, all I fish is a drop shot banana

Braid is imperative... If they wrap you around the stalk, the braid will usually cut through it

If its really thick a power tackle 105 76 , or a Bobby Barrack Frog Rod , I use both and 80 lb power pro

50lbs braid works best (cuts better) if your in grass. 65 if your around timber. Now I use my own custom built 8' frog rods along with Stanley top toads (I can get a better hook up). And if the fish is over 5#s you better have a 36v trollingmotor. I always keep my big motor trimmed up and hydro all the way up so the boat will move faster. I also have a dipnet with a 6' handle within arms reach. Now I might be completely wrong but this works best for me.

Frog fishing obviously requires the right equipment, but beyond that it has been my experience at Fork to set the hook as soon as they hit. Other places I seem to give them a a few seconds to take the frog before I set the hook, but out there it seems like they know as soon as they hit that its not something real, and they spit it out quick. I've missed some good ones out there frog fishing, but all of them I have caught have been on quick hook sets, and try and get them out away from the pads or stumps before they have a chance to use those things as leverage to get the frog out if they are hooked.

Don't forget to bend the hooks up a little to ensure a better hook set.

Thanks for all the tips, keep them coming! Looks like I need to upgrade my toolkit. For now, I'll trade what I was using with my A-Rig setup. Will spool a better braid on it... Has anyone else had a problem with a braided line flattening and unbraiding?

I am waiting for a full take before I set the hook (normal frogging), but I will try to be quicker. Will loose more on the hook set than I usually do. But I won't hook them, maybe they'll hit it more than once.

Power pro is what I use. I've tried all the new high tech lines but still go back to pp.

I prefer the original power pro vs the power pro super slick. The super slick has a tendency to get tangled and backlash once it gets used awhile. That's been my experience anyway

About like everyone else said. Except all 3 of my frog set ups are at least 8 to 1. Once I set the hook I'll actually step back a few steps while cranking like crazy. I broke a rod last week so I may not have the greatest method lol.

Yep, back to original PP for me, the Suffix slick I bought and spooled was having the problem, PP is great!
