I have fished it many times. I used to wear the sandies out near the hot water inlet. The last few times I've gone about the only thing I've caught were yellow bass. The yellows have pretty much taken over out there. Several throws of my cast net on the aerators netted numerous yellows and only a few shad.

I've fished it a lot, but haven't been out there in a few years. Any area by the dam, or the marina is good. The lake itself is pretty good fishing. I've never caught anything worth bragging about. I use to catch quite a few small Bass, crappie, and channel cats out of there. Sunfish are plentiful, and I've seen some 10 inch & over Bluegill caught out of there.

From what I hear it's full of those pesky little Yellow Bass that were piped over from from Benbrook lake, when Weatherford got extremely low on account of the drought. Friend of mine hates those things because they are really small and won't leave your smaller live bait, or fresh cut bait alone. Apparently from what he claims the lake is overpopulated with them.

Don't know if it is true, but he says he read somewhere they spawn before most other fish. When other fish spawn they feed heavily on their eggs and offspring, if I remember correctly?

Most of the yellow bass are real small but if you put a bit of worm under a bobber anywhere near the aerators then you'll have trouble keeping them off of your hook.

I fried up a few yellow bass today along with a catfish that I caught today on the Brazos and some red drum and speckled trout from last month's trip to the coast. The yellow bass were good and reminded me of crappie. The drum and trout were both better than the fresh water fish so I guess I need to plan another trip to the coast.
You'll need to catch a ton of them to make a decent meal because they are small but the good news is that Weatherford Lake is full of them. Good luck.

I have eaten Yellow Bass before, but not out of Weatherford Lake. They are every bit as good to eat as Sand Bass, maybe even a little better?

When you ask people if a certain type of fish is good to eat? You will get varying opinions. Most of the time, there are a lot of variables that can influence the eating qualities of any fish. Just me, but I always consider a few things when making the decision to keep and prepare any fish for the dinner table.

A good example of this would be Bullhead Catfish. You'll hear every kind of opinion about the eating qualities of this family of Catfish. You'll hear things like "they're only good for bait",""they taste like mud & are terrible", to "there is no tastier catfish than Bullhead's!" I tend to agree with the latter.

Let me clarify by saying just about any type of fish can be excellent, or terrible tablefare depending on time of year, water quality, what they have been feeding on,the relative health of each fish over all, and how they are prepared before cooking. Last, but not least how they are cooked.

Agree on the how you cook the fish. We catch bullheads at at a lake in Minnesota my family has been going to for over 75 years now. They usually start to hit right when the sun goes down and then you can be catching them right and left. Nasty fish, slimy, bleed all over the boat, hard to get the hook out. Meat can be good if fixed properly but it has to be done right. Things are nasty to clean too. I have had bullheads that have been gutted and filleted so all that is left is the head, ribs and backbone and tail and they still try to bite you. Those suckers just won't die.
