I've tried a bunch of different techniques, lures, and locations. I've also tried using live bait; digging for worms with my daughter and using my cast net to catch bait fish. I even tried going after carp with canned corn. It seems the only thing that has produced for me are small roadrunners with crappie jigs and small rooster tails. I've also gotten chased off two lakes by some Koreans because I wasn't using cane poles though there aren't any fishing regulations in Korea. I'm having a hard time finding good tackle stores but there is one that is close to post. They are way overpriced; I paid $12 for a pack of Yamamoto worms. Thankfully most places will deliver to an APO and I brought most of my tackle with me.

These are also the smallest bass I've caught on rod and reel.

Thats awesome. Makes the thought of going back to Korea a little less crappy. When I was stationed there I felt like a fish with as much beer and soju I drank. Not my favorite assignment. Looks like your making the best of it. Good luck.

Awesome! I'm headed to Seoul next month and was going to try to get some fishing in. We'll be visiting JeJu Island for a couple days and might try to get out.

Question... a lot of high end rods and reels are made in Korea. Have you seen any that can be had for cheaper than here in the US? Maybe the same rods or reels but not branded?

Spent 4 years of my early childhood in Yeosu and Seoul. Have fond memories. Thanks for sharing the pics. She is adorable, wonderful smile.

I've only been able to find two tackle stores since I've been here. One is really close to post and sells mostly carp tackle for cane poles. KT is a strictly bass oriented store and has the floor space about the same size as the fishing section at Academy. Most of their rods and reels are behind the cash register and I don't know enough Korean to strike up a conversation with the people that work there. They have plenty of name brand stuff at KT; Abu Garcia, Shimano, Daiwa, etc. I did see a few micro-guide baitcasting rods, a couple of St. Croix rods, and some spinning rods. As far as steals, I'm not sure. I'm also not in Seoul where I think I could possibly find more tackle stores.

I hear Jeju Island is nice and I'd love to do some salt water fishing there. We had some friends that went on a deep sea charter and they didn't use rods and reels; they used a hand reel kind of like the one you use when flying a kite. I hope you have a good time. Koreans are generally really friendly. It is a little crowded here and they're not afraid of getting into your personal space when you're walking around. They also have a tendency to drive aggressively in the city, kind of like in New York or LA, but on the highway they're somewhat predictable. Luckily they have a great mass transit system. Last bit of advice, it's ok to drink the water here. All their drinking water is purified and filtered.

B.Dill,
I remember when I was stationed over there the base MWR office offered trips to the rod and reel factories. I picked up some great deals the times I went.

Yea! I've done some searching and found 2 of the major manufacturers. From my understanding, to get premium pricing you need 500 pcs. Which would be fine if I could sell about 400 of them! LOL
I may take a taxi or bus to one of them while we are there. None of them are in the city.

I never found any bass there. I might need to go back and try again.

I took that trip when I was there several years ago and was really disappointed. All I found was cheap spinning outfits and they never heard of bait casters.

Thanks for all the support. Reina is definitely a trooper. She still has fun fishing even though we're not catching. I'm going to have to go to the MWR and see if they have any trips scheduled to the factories. I'd love to see them and it would probably be much better than an episode of How It's Made.
