George, I was actually looking at this again this weekend, along with other deer hair poppers ties on U-tube. I'll take your advise and give it a try. Thanks for the input.

Great topwater bite tonight!!! I think the fish can sense the impending cold front and the beginning of fall. I used the same 2/0 short shank tie. Up to this point everything I caught on this size tie was under 2 lbs. But tonight I caught 5 bass and 4 of them were over 2 lbs. This one measured 21 inches.

And if you're curious what happens when you tie the froggy on a size 10 streamer hook... Just be careful where you put them size 40 feet. Don't want to be stomping any 2 lb bass, lol Great pic. Kirk

I tied up the Dusty pattern and tried it this weekend with no luck. I tried different retrieves but it acts much like a mouse pattern so I tried the two hand strip most of the time. I personally have no confidence in patterns that glide or have a straight tail. I have tried several different frog, mouse and gurgler patterns with very limited success. I have found the spread of the tail feathers; and the diving action and/or popping action of the froggy flies to be far more successful. I went out to a ranch with overpopulated ponds yesterday evening to try out a different color pattern with no success. I switched over to the same 2/0 short shank froggy tie and caught another bass over 20 inches. Through this first cold front of the fall I have caught fewer fish but they were much bigger. They seem to be moving closer to the shoreline. The top water bite in the evening has been better than the morning; which is a 180 degree switch as well.

The top water bite was beginning to improve this last week before the cold front came through. I would expect it to start picking up in a few weeks so I tied up a couple of Froggy flies this weekend. I put eyes on them but instead of just gluing them on I also added epoxy around them. I hope that makes a difference and the eyes will stay on for a while.

This is the link to the William Tedrick's (Hook-Line & Sinker) Fly Tying: The Beginners Froggy Fly It is the easiest to tie, keeps the back legs separated really well and catches fish!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUwF502_zSQ

I tried fishing with a large froggy fly for a couple of hours this weekend with no luck. I switched over to using a Ms. Prissy popper and immediately starting having success. Over and over its seems I have been catching bigger fish on smaller flies this time of year. I caught this bass which was over 19". It was the largest fish I have caught on my new 4 weight so far. It was a great fight and made for a great day of fishing. I also caught quite a few sunfish and bluegill.

So cool! I like this simple pattern, with hairy belly and pig tail.
